The Coastal Town of Newport, Oregon
It’s already day 3 of our trip, but it’s hard to remember that since we packed in so many things and were derailed from our original plans when our suitcases were stolen. (Was that a run-on sentence?)
After driving all night and half of the day, we decided to lodge in Newport, Oregon, a small tourist town.
Down at the pier, where all the restaurants and tourist shops line the streets, there are some resident sea lions. The shop owners really don’t like them there because they are so noisy but it’s great if you’re a tourist!
To some people, the sea lion reminds them of a giant slug. Do you see the resemblance?
Scenes from the dock.
The younger kids had never went crabbing,so we rented some crabbing nets and took them to a bridge where they could drop their rings into the water. The rental place also gives you the bait, which in this case was mink.
You can only keep certain types of crab, but we did pretty good considering it’s not really crabbing season. We kept 10. We took them to a boat that was docked, where they will clean & cook them for $1.50 each.
This was our last day in Oregon & then we were off for Canada. We pulled another (almost) all-nighter, not putting in to a hotel till 3 a.m…. but that post will be for another day. 🙂

Hello Sister Elisabeth! I’m pretty sure Shawn and I stopped in Newport while on our honeymoon. We also went down to the pier and ate some great local seafood! Looks like you all had a wonderful time there.

Heather, Oh, how fun that you and Shawn were in Newport, too. I really like Oregon. I’ve only been there twice, but it is a favorite of mine.

Hi Elisabeth, didn’t know you were taking a trip out west. We are flying to San Francisco and travelling up the coast to Canada. Any tips on what to see or where to stay? Oh…we won’t be camping!

About 3 hours from SF along Interstate 5 (Coalinga) is a unique place to satiate your hunger. The Harris Ranch has a restaurant and Inn. We’ve only eaten at the restaurant, and haven’t been there for about 20 years but you can google it and get an idea by perusing the menus, etc. A beautiful Spanish Hacienda type building that offers an interesting experience.

WOW! I love the starfish suctioned onto the poles! Neat! The sea lions are cute, but I can definitely understand why they wouldn’t want them there. That noise would drive me crazy! YUM! Crab!
