Hand Lettering So Good You’ll Be Amazed

If you practice something long enough, you can become quite talented. I was so impressed with the hand lettering at a wedding I was at recently. It was so amazing, one would have thought decals or stencils were used. Before I show you all the beautiful hand lettering, let me tell you a little more about the wedding. (I’m really kind of embarrassed to share these pictures because they’re not that good. I always have my camera with me but not this time and so I was using the mother-of-the-bride’s camera to capture parts of the day for her. Let me tell you, it’s so worth investing in a good quality camera if you’re wanting decent looking pictures.) My good friend’s daughter got married. We’ve…

An Unusual Place for an Engagement Party

Did you know it is possible to throw an engagement party in an airport? My dear husband decided we should welcome back the happily engaged couple who had went, along with my son, to a youth retreat in Tennessee and then up to visit friends in Michigan, as well. It was a red-eye flight, the airport was quietening down after a day of thousands bustling through its corridors.  Restaurants had closed but not before we had received permission to set up in one of them. Justus and Audrey were so happy to see their brother Zachary.  Since he became engaged they have really latched on to him.   Pretty nice, Russell.  Pretty nice.  (I think he did a beautiful job, don’t you.)   Hey, we look pretty good for it being past…

A Fun Hello Kitty Party

I finally got my act together and gave Audrey her 7th birthday party.  Her birthday was at Thanksgiving time but you know how busy the holiday season can be, so missy didn’t get one until this past weekend.   It was her very first birthday party she’s had where she got to invite friends and she was so excited, not to mention helpful in the planning. She chose the theme Hello Kitty.  I found plenty of inspiration online for the party and then this great Hello Kitty birthday printables kit for FREE by Shery K Designs was perfect.  The printables are adorable and the variety of items to use are just great. These little favor bags were made by printing off one of Shery’s designs and then cutting…

Serenity’s 14th Golf Par-Tee

Yes, Serenity’s birthday was clear back in November but we just had her birthday celebration the end of December. We decided to go with a mini-golf theme since Serenity wanted to go somewhere that had go-karts, etc. I made these invitations using Printmaster for the letters the green and then I used skewers and foam for the flag and balls. My mom and I laughed so hard watching the kids ride the bumper boats.  They were soaked!   After an afternoon at the Funtasticks Park, we went back to my sister’s house for a golf themed supper I had prepared. Then the ultimate golf cake was presented by none other than Martha – our own cake decorator.  What’s with the name Martha and creativity? The water and rocks were fantastic…

Well the big event is over. What a special evening we had celebrating Zachary’s high school graduation! We had about 145-150 people and plenty of food for all. With all the activity of family being around for Zachary’s graduation, I got too busy to be posting and then after the graduation dinner, we took off on a little get-away. More on our get-away in another post. The weather was beautiful, the night of the dinner with no wind or rain and the temperature about 70°. Of course there was lots of preplanning. Tables and chairs had to be brought up from the garage to the lawn, table coverings put on and chairs wiped down. You can see Russell in the background stringing up lights that he wired. Russ also built a platform for…

A Book Lovers Tea Party for Young Ladies

The tea party club my daughter started almost 2 years ago with her Anne of Green Gables Tea Party (read about it here and here) is still continuing with this months tea party being hosted by Sophia, Meghan & Abigail.  The tea party is for older girls but if the siblings have younger sisters, we welcome them, too.  The theme was a “Ladies Book Society Tea Party”.  What a fun theme that was! Audrey decided to go as Pigling Bland, the character Beatrix Potter writes about in The Tale of Piglind Bland. A few weeks prior to the tea party, Audrey wanted to play Pigling Bland with Justus so she got a stick and put a plastic grocery bag on the end.  For the tea party,…

Thanksgiving Name Cards

For most of my dinner gatherings I use name cards. They’re fun to make and it just seems to add a fun touch, in my opinion.  When using name cards, I try to seat people with someone that I think they’ll be comfortable with. Here are a few ideas I’ve found for Thanksgiving. Martha Stewart has this Mayflower centerpiece.  Unless you enlarge it, the template is not big enough for a centerpiece.  It also is much too time consuming and complicated. Have you ever heard of veneer for a craft project? I wouldn’t even know where to find it. For my Mayflower I used construction paper (after my first failed attempt using Martha’s directions) and hot glued it together.  Very easy.  I also used a thin bamboo skewer…

Host Your Own Anne of Green Gables Tea Party

Who cannot love the little orphan Anne of Green Gables? Her caring, vivacious and imaginative personality warms us, causes us to laugh and captures our hearts. Today I want to share with you ideas we had for an Anne of Green Gables Tea Party. In hostessing this party, Serenity first made her invitations. She found a picture of Anne online and placed that on the front of her invitations. Inside the invite she wrote: You’re invited to an afternoon of fun, friendship and tea in the spirit of Anne of Green Gables! We will be having a tea party at my house (Green Gables) and then going to the White Sands Hotel (our living room) to recite some poems. Where: Green Gables (xxxx Household) When:…

Tea Parties for Children & Hostess Skills

A week ago Serenity (11yo) hosted her first ever event – an Anne of Green Gables tea party. I was amazed to watch her planning skills and creativity blossom with this occasion. She’s a girl after my own heart. I always type up my plans on computer to help keep me organized. She was on top of it – everyday reviewing her notes of what needed to be done. The day before and morning of the tea party she was bustling around decorating and getting food ready. A little friend came to stay the night before and was also a wonderful help. Serenity and her friend, Katelyn, made these fruit kabobs… so that I could do this… The girls did a beautiful job decorating using…

Best White Icing Ever

When preparing for a birthday party, for some reason I never feel like I have the time to make a birthday cake from scratch. I usually buy a cake mix, maybe make my own icing or purchase some. I really dislike store icing and yet I didn’t have any homemade icing recipe that I was bowled over by – until Justus’s birthday. I found one at Allrecipes that I’m hooked on. Honestly, I kept going back for more cake just so I could have a little more frosting. Of course, I’ve always been a frosting gal. Give me some icing, along with ice cream, and I’m happy. But I think I have a keeper icing recipe this time. If you’re looking for a great white…

Birthday's & Lil' Buckaroos

It may take a while for your browser to load all the pictures. I have a lot! It’s always a lot of fun for me to plan my kids’ birthday parties. I especially like themes. This was Justus’s first birthday party where we invited friends over to help him celebrate so he was pretty excited. I get a lot of ideas from browsing the web but probably my most favorite site for planning birthdays is Birthday Party Ideas. Who would have thought? Most of the ideas I used for Justus’s party, if not all, came from that site. This cake was so simple but fun. I used these figures from the toy box. There were a few tails missing from the horses and the cowboy…
