Lessons from a Termite & How to Eat a Frog

Did you know that in 1 year, more damage is caused by the lowly termite than hurricanes, floods, fires, earthquakes and tornadoes combined? This seems inconceivable but it’s a proven fact. How do these small insects do it? By taking one bite at a time. Have you heard of the book Eat that Frog by Brian Tracy? The book is based on the thought that if the very first thing you do each morning is to eat a live frog, nothing worse can happen the rest of the day. Ugh, yeah, I could probably agree with that. Take a look at your To-do List.  What on there is the very worst thing that you really don’t want to do? That’s your frog. And…. you must eat it – one bite…

Freezer Organization 101

Ohhh, I’m loving Microsoft Excel.  For years I was intimidated by its mysteries but since I’ve started messing around with it – learning tips from my boys -I’m really finding it useful. This time around I used it for my freezer organization. First let me begin with the cleaning of the freezer because that was the very beginning of my freezer organization and the beginning seems like a very good place to start. Every year around this time I clean my freezers (a chest and upright) because hunting season is just around the corner and having a place to put the meat when it’s brought home is sort of important, I figure. Now you may wonder, why would anyone need 2 freezers.  Well, I didn’t always have two.  I started off with…

The Secret Tool to Planning a Variety of Occasions

Preparations are in full swing around here for the coming weekend with Zachary’s high school graduation dinner on Saturday. The house will be full again. My whole family, except for 4 of them, will be here – even Seth is coming and staying for a week! Last graduation dinner (Seth’s) ,my sister came and masterminded the event.  She’ll be coming again which I’m very grateful for.  She stays working in the background while I get to enjoy the party.  How sweet is that?!   It may sound kind of sad for her but really our family enjoys planning and managing these kinds of events.  So she’s pretty excited, too.  Right, Sis?  Just thrilled?  Oh, that’s splendid! Although my sister is doing a lot of the planning on…

Homeschool Cabinet Tidied Up

Our homeschool cabinet needs tidied up now and again. Little people put things away cram things in any way they can… After about 15 minutes, order was restored. That messy cabinet was an eyesore.  It’s funny how a little 15 minute organization spurt can make one feel so much better. Joining up with Tackle it Tuesday.

Outdoor Storage Benches

I have been searching for a solution for our outdoor shoes for a LONG time.  Living in the country and feeding animals daily we have stinky, smelly & sometimes muddy shoes that we do not want to bring indoors.  I had my son build me an outdoor shoe rack as part of a woodworking project and I loved the finished product it but it’s under repair at the present moment (disrepair caused by age & weather) and I don’t know if I’ll ever see it again.   So, I’m getting desperate and am starting to look online for a solution. Here are some outdoor solutions I found.  Which one is your favorite? 1.  I really like this mudroom shoe rack for about $64.  It even comes with…

How to Organize Household Cleaning with Kids

Do you have a particular day that you do an overall cleaning of the house?  Friday is my day.  Mom did it that way and I just followed in her footsteps.  Sometimes after having a crowd on the weekend it really should be done again on Monday but unless it’s really bad I don’t do an overall cleaning.  I just wait for Friday.  With kids you could vacuum everyday and with all the dust you have in Arizona, I could dust every few hours but I guess I would rather do other things.  You with me?  As you know, I’m a believer in having your children help around the house like I mentioned my kids do here.  I believe it gives them an appreciation for the…

Organizing Table Linens

When I looked in my kitchen cupboard and saw this… I decided something needed to change. So I took my linens and hung them up using pant hangers and regular hangers.  I first thought I would place them in our guest bedroom closet but decided that wouldn’t work if I had guests staying overnight.  You savvy?  I finally settled on hanging them in our coat closet.  Sometime I’ll change the hangers so they all match because it’s really bugging me but for now it is what it is. Edited to say:  I thought, “Why procrastinate?  Just change the hangers!”  So for your viewing pleasure, here are the matching hangers.  It’s the little things, people. The aforementioned cupboard was empty for only about 2 minutes.  I placed some of my dinner…

Organizing Under the Bathroom Sink

Since Flylady’s mission for the week is the bathroom I thought that today’s organizing focus would be under the bathroom sink. Under the bathroom sink is probably one of the easiest places to tidy and declutter.  Here are some steps to cleaning that area. 1.  Empty the cupboard out. 2.  Wipe clean with a damp rag. 3.  Gather like items with like. (for example: shampoo, toothpaste & lotions) 4.   Restock your toilet paper, hand towels and bath towels, if needed. 5.  Discard anything that is not wanted and then place the remaining items back under the sink in tidy way or use one of the following ideas to help you maximize your use of the area. The Storage Store offers the following solutions for your hair dryer & accessories. This one is for…

Hair Organizers

On Tuesdays, I would like to start posting about different organizing solutions (unless there’s something else I just have to post about!)  If you have a question about how to organize any part of your home, please leave a comment and I will try to do some research on what products are out there that would help. Ribbons, pony tail holders, bobby pins, barrettes, head bands…. Girls like them all.  Our hair ribbons especially need some organization.  Here are some ideas I found. Lil’ Bow Keep has this adorable little organizer for $30. Babylocks Hair Clips has these for $10. This one is Designs by Joy. Here’s a DIY organizer by Factory Direct Crafts using a picture frame and wooden spools. This lady has several…

A Week of Organization

By the time you read this on Friday my 3 oldest boys, along with my husband, will most likely be home after being gone a whole week hunting for bull elk.  They’ve had a good time seeing hundreds of elk and getting within a few yards of them, seeing them bugle and watching some cow elk playing, kicking up their heels.  One morning Wesley saw a mountain lion with her cub walking along.  Unfortunately, they did not bag their game.   I guess the elk have to win some of the time. I have been doing quite well, surprisingly, with only my 3 youngest and myself at home.  I was able to accomplish things I normally am unable to get to.  I did some organizing of…
