My Son is Engaged!

January 1, 2013 will always be memorable in that fact that my son, Zachary became engaged. The same Zachary that graduated in August 2011 and the same one whose life was spared in an auto accident in 2011  From a tiny little boy – only 7lbs. 1oz…. He grew up on me. He’s known Hannah for about 4 years but they didn’t start courting till this past October. He was already a goner before he started courting Hannah, so you can imagine what he was like after.   He is so happy and I’m thrilled that the Lord has given him the desires of his heart – a wonderful Christian girl who will love him and stand by him as they go through life together. He’s currently in Michigan,…

Christmas of 2012

Hello everyone! I hope you had a Merry Christmas. We had ourselves a wonderful time during the Christmas season. It was Christmas with my side of the family this year.  Mom and Dad were here as well as my sister and her entire family for a grand total of 22. Even Seth was here after being gone to Manitoba for over a month commercial ice fishing.  It’s a family joke, Seth’s rather non-talkative nature. So, Serenity drew this image before ironing it onto a shirt for Seth. On Oscar the Gouch’s trash can it say’s, “You talkin’ to me?”   Christmas Eve we had an informal Asian meal.   We sang some hymns, played some games and watched a slide show I put together of past Christmases.   Christmas Day dinner was a bit…

These Hands

As I was snapping a few pictures at Thanksgiving, I did a close-up of mom and dad carving the turkey.  I’ve learned that you never know what pictures will be the ones you end up loving. Mom said, “What can you do with a picture like that?”  I gave her a few reasons – such as I might want to make a post on my blog about “These Hands”.  So here it is mom.   These hands held me in the first few minutes of life.  I’m sure they touched my ears, my nose, my little feet and yes, even my little hands as they marveled at the miracle of life. My mother was very devoted and I can imagine her gently bathing me and…

I really should have made this post several months ago, but well, here it is now. Seth flew to Manitoba this past summer to minnow with his cousin, Nathan. Nathan lives the life my son dreams of, hunting, trapping as well as doing guided hunts. Now Nathan has a new venture of minnowing which is simply catching minnows and shipping them off to be sold in stores. You may think this doesn’t sound like much of a job but if I told you they were catching approximately 70,000 minnows a day, it might change your perspective. In much te same way that salmon do their run at a certain time of year, the minnows do, too.   Nathan in his waders. These are the traps that…

A Blessed Thanksgiving Holiday

Thanksgiving for me always brings to mind Family Friends Food Thankfulness for the many ways we are Blessed   This year we flew to Pennsylvania for 10 days and spent Thanksgiving with my sister and her family as well as mom and dad. We had some interesting flight times.  We woke from our beds at 3:00 to catch our 6 a.m.morning special flight and would have spent the rest of the day in a fog except the airlines was kind enough to arrange a 5 hour layover for us in Chicago. So we decided to see if we could get all 6 of us people’s that were flying into the United Club lounge on 2 passes. At first it was a no-go but then the…

The Day I Faced My Dread

Never underestimate the power a picture of a family simply living life together can have on another. Because that’s where it all started for me. You know, most all of us influence somebody by the things that we do, and the way we live, and the things we say. We influence somebody. Somebody is watching your life. — W.M. Branham   These pictures of another family made me think.  Go ahead & click, I’ll still be here. “You don’t have to be a person of influence to be influential. In fact, the most influential people in my life are probably not even aware of the things they’ve taught me.” ― Scott Adams Because of these pictures, my cardinal rule of NEVER be involved and make…

I’ve Been Converted

I thought I had it good. I love my travel trailer with its slide-out but I was converted this year. Converted to camping in a canvas wall tent. (photo from Montana Canvas) Although a travel trailer certainly has some pros, I can only think of one of thing that it does that I cannot do the same in a wall tent. What I love about the wall tent. the cozy rustic charm the canvas walls give wood burning stove sleeping accommodations & kitchen under one roof 2 tables can be left in place w/ chairs even when we have our sleeping bags and kitchen set up When I stayed in my travel trailer, there were always issues of running out of water (with running water,…

Roughing It for 5 Days

I really don’t even know where to begin. Hunting Camp 2012 is over but the memories just still keep coming on.  It was a good year. There were 7 elk tags in the camp and all 7 were filled.  We’re all very thankful because we know we have plenty of good healthy meat for the next year. We were so happy for Serenity because she tagged out opening morning. Many times she’s had to hunt all week before she got her’s, so this time she was able to spend more time at camp.  I looked at her and thought I saw Annie Oakley but then I looked again and it was Serenity.   One shot, standing up, from the shoulder.  Aaaammmaaazing girl.   Wesley tagged…

Hunting Camp is Here!

The elk hunting season is here and we’re headed out for another memorable year.  It looked like camp was going to be smaller this time (only about 40), but we’re almost up to 60 now. There seems there might be a small hitch in the weather. It seems it wants to rain. Like really bad. 90% chance.  Not good, but thankfully we have the wall tent in which we can all gather and a wood burning stove to keep us toasty, games to play and plenty of people to fellowship with.  Oh, and food.  I think we’ll be alright after all!       See you all next week!   I don’t envy the hunters though.:)

There’s one thing on kids’ minds when they go camping and that’s Fire Early the next morning, Justus and Audrey got right to that. I can only imagine what it must have been like for the early Indians and pioneers who had to make gathering and cooking their food as a main part of the day.  So much work!  I wonder if they ever thought of becoming more organized and scheduling their days better? Somehow I just can’t picture that. Can you? After awakening from a cozy slumber and hearing the quiet sounds of twigs being snapped and the murmurs of Zachary, Justus and Audrey, I emerged from the tent to this gorgeous sight. Do you enjoy cooking when you camp?  I do. I get…

A Family Get-away Gone Awry

It was supposed to be a simple 3 day getaway – a special time in honor of Serenity for her 8th grade graduation. I’d bring all the food; we’d camp out; costs would be minimal. Simple. Zachary’s “boss of the year” cleared him and Seth (who is working with Zach for a few weeks) from working Friday, so the plan was for them to arrive home Thursday night and we’d take off Friday morning.   Reality! After being gone all day, me and my wonderful assistant, Serenity, packed and prepare food till 11 p.m.  By 12:30 we were all in bed but up again by 4. Red eyes with grit in them.  That’s exactly how I looked and felt the next morning. Zion National Park…

A Round-up of Vanuatu – Part VII

This is it – the final post of Zachary’s 10-day trip to Vanuatu. There was a church dedication while they were there   I thought it was really nice and quite interesting that the Presbyterian church came and sang at the ribbon cutting ceremony.  Actually, the whole village showed up for the dedication. The oldest lady of the village did the actual cutting of the ribbon and some official in Vanuatu came and spoke as well.   Leaving one of the villages they headed to this airport to catch their plane. Interestingly enough, the girl on the left in the blue shirt was a peace worker from Ann Arbor, Michigan. View from the plane   On one of their final days in Vanuatu, the Vanuatuan’s…

As we wind our “trip” to Vanuatu to a close, we must make another stop, this time to the 24 hour marketplace.   In Vanuatu, they grow most of their own food. Beautiful!   For baskets, they weave coconut leaves. You can also buy the leaves for various usages. One use is to wrap up their lunch. After they carefully place their lunch inside a coconut leaf, they wrap it up like a package and take a “string” which is from a (coconut??) leaf and tie it together.     I find this amazing and beautiful. The flowers that grow naturally in Vanuatu captured Zachary’s attention. Who can blame him?  They are beautiful.     These flowers were quite interesting. They just hung like this…

Bed & Breakfast Hut in Vanuatu – Part V

B&B Hut in the South Pacific?  Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? The hut that Zachary stayed in wasn’t called a B&B by the locals but Zachary tells me that’s essentially what it was. It is located near an active volcano. At one time somebody came and stayed there for a whole year while they studied the volcano. So, should you be intrigued enough to take a trip to an active volcano that has no guard rails to protect one from venturing too far, Vanuatu is the place to go. I’m sorry but I don’t know the exact name of the island, but if you’re interested contact me and I will get right on that. Sincerely, Me Solar panels that charge a car battery so you can have lights at…

The Outdoor Kitchens of Vanuatu – Part IV

The real reason for the trip to Vanuatu was a youth camp that our pastor had been asked to preach at.  Every day they were there, even before the youth camp started, they had church services, and that’s where the real conversations on a personal level occurred. The pictures I am posting of Vanuatu are with a focus on showing you the land and people. Chickens could be found everywhere, running around freely. Sometimes they roosted in a tree near the hut they stayed at. Zachary was very glad when supper consisted of a rooster.  Cock-a-doodle-do!!!   The kitchens were a bit more primitive than what we have here in America. The Kitchen Sink Outdoor Pantry They are set up for tourists with huts for…

Jesus loves the little children All the children of the world… Some of the precious children of Vanuatu Little children are some of Zachary’s favorite people.  I love the little ballerina pink dress this little girl is wearing.  She looks like a princess. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 19:14 Repairing the Roads Road Construction Crew A community effort and it looks like they’re all having a good time. There was a b-i-g pothole (you can see in the picture that it’s full of water) and the islanders were filling it with a clayey type soil. The footwear in Vanuatu is simple.  Shoes or no shoes. Here both the…

Coconut in its Raw Form – Part II

Continuing Zachary’s 10 day trip to Vanuatu… There was an abundant supply of fresh fruit everywhere, coconut, mango (not quite in season), papaya, and banana. Most of us have never seen a coconut except at the grocery store, so I thought you might find it interesting to see these different views of it. The coconut in its original form hanging on the tree. Then the machete does its work… And you let your teeth finish the job.                                                                                         More to come…

Ten Days in Vanuatu – Part I

Zachary is home as of Tuesday night. Yesterday, we got to spend 2 hours (yes, that was a 2) looking at all 620 pictures while he narrated and read from his journal. This is the same boy who would have definitely been labeled if he had went to a public school and writing by hand was so very tiring for him. But here he kept a journal of his own accord. Never give up hope, mom’s! I want to share a part of Zachary’s trip with you all so I’ll be doing it in parts. I don’t know how many parts I’ll need, maybe only 3, but we’ll find out as go along. Vanuatu is in the South Pacific by New Zealand and Australia. At some point…

Where in the World is Vanuatu?

Across the Pacific Ocean, east of Australia, is the island nation Vanuatu.   And that’s where Zachary flew yesterday.  I really wanted to tell you how many miles away it is but Google Maps let me down.:( MILES Zachary was travelling with our pastor and another couple. He was really looking forward to this opportunity of going and meeting fellow Christian believers.  The people (I’m not sure what they call themselves.) are having their first ever youth meeting and our pastor has been asked to speak. I’m a little sketchy on all the details, but they’re landing in Port Vila and will be spending time on Pentecost Island and Ambrym Island. If you think of it, please pray that they will be a blessing and help…

How to Throw a Party in a Hotel Suite

Have you ever thrown a party in a hotel? I have given one about once every 2 years. You see, our homeschool convention is held in Phoenix and they also do a jr. high graduation ceremony on Friday night… usually.  This year, the graduation was on a Saturday, so we had to throw our party on Friday night… in honor of Serenity. We rented a suite and then got bumped up (courtesy of the hotel) to a hospitality suite. It was lovely and nice and perfect for the occasion. But let me show you pictures, since that’s the best way to “tell” you.   At home you do as much as possible. It’s not fun trying to do it in a hotel! About 2 hours before…
