In the Middle of Wedding Planning Came the 4-H EXPO

Oh dear! Our platters were full enough but then it was the 4-H EXPO week and time for Justus and Audrey to show their pigs.

It’s a 3 day event. First day is the show. They show and are judged in two different classes. One for confirmation and one for showmanship. The second day other animals like steers, lambs, goats & small stock are being judged and the pigs get the day off. The auction, where all the animals are sold, occurs on the third day.

Signs had to be put up.

Keeping the walkway clean is a never ending job. There is an herdmanship award given to the club that is the most helpful, keeps walkways clean and has pen signs complete and hung.
Washing your pig is very important. Pigs are pros at getting dirty!

This year they did something fun on the show days to get the spectators involved. You could pay $5 and volunteer someone to show a pig or steer. If the person really didn’t want to do it, they could pay $10 to get out of it. 🙂

We had a friend visiting from New York that was volunteered. haha
I was volunteered too and I can tell you that it’s a little easier for me to tell my kids how it’s supposed to be done than it was for me to actually do it!

Austin was here visiting Serenity and some sneaky somebody volunteered both of them for the steer show. Austin had never shown a steer before and felt pretty lost.

Serenity was wearing sandals so she quickly had to borrow someone’s boots.
Serenity had raised a steer before and she did such a great job that she won. Yay!
Ruth and our little granddaughter, Hope.
The judge asking Justus some questions about cuts of meat, etc.

In addition to how well they show their pig, they are judged on their knowledge of pigs. Questions can be about where to find certain cuts of meat, the confirmation of the pig and it’s weak and strong points as well as other things.

The kids didn’t win any prizes but they still did fairly well in showmanship. Maybe next year. Another year of 4-H in the books and back to wedding planning. haha

I love hearing from you! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
