Salzburg, Austria (Day 4, Part 2)
We enjoyed Salzburg so much. Historic Old Town was fun to walk but finding our way around was a bit challenging – even with GPS. We used Rick Steve’s Vienna Tour Book and found it so informative and worth every penny we paid.
On the outskirts of Old Town was this new store called Sound of Music World. Most Austrians have never heard of The Sound of Music movie and those that have do not hold it in high regard. I wonder who owns this store? Probably not an Austrian. 🙂
Old Town has some fancy shops – expensive name brand shops.
You might like to see the inside of a quaint Austrian restaurant.
Welcome to the University Church of Salzburg
The doors are huge!

Churches are everywhere!
This is Salzburg Cathedral…
Mozart was baptized here in 1756, the day after he was born.
There are buildings built against the rock faces.
A monastery built right into the face of the cliff wall.
A little cafe built right in the rock. The exterior looked so cute.
Carriage rides….
The cutest coffee truck…
St. Peter’s Cemetery
All the graves are so well tended – not because there is a caretaker but because the descendants of the deceased care for them. Another difference here in Austria (and I’ve read it is also the case in many European countries) is that the graves are rented, so as long as you make payment, the headstone remains. According to Rick Steve’s Vienna book, rent bills are sent out every 10 years. There were plenty of old graves but I was quite surprised to see that there were many newer ones. For a cemetery that old, you would think that all the headstones would be from long ago, but not so. I guess people let go of the family grave after a few generations.
St. Peter’s Cemetery is the place you see in The Sound of Music. They didn’t actually film the scene here but instead duplicated the set at the movie studio.
Someone made a grocery stop before stopping for a bit at the cemetery…
And I have even more to share with you including a visit to Europe’s oldest restaurant!

Thanks for sharing. We mostly drove in the tallest Alps of Austria, making our way to Italy and then back to Germany. Would have been nice to have seen more but at the time we thought we may be cutting trip short to get back for the memorial service in time, for Bro. Ken. Love all the old towns, narrow roads..but the favorite is along the country side and hearing the cow bells and church bells ringing.
