Driving Adventures in Salzburg (Day 4)
Our little trusty car saw some places the week we were in Austria!
Google maps – oh it is the most handy app but it can lead you astray sometimes.
We put in Salzburg Cathedral and faithfully followed the voice instructions telling us where to go. It was rather baffling in Salzburg because next to a historic site or even almost attached to it, there would be a private residence, so there are no signs indicating you shouldn’t be there with your car… or at least that we could see.
So around tight corners, that would only be a one-way if it were American cars but is a two-way in Salzburg, (for the cars are much smaller) up hills and over and around we drove and drove.
Passing those poor tourists who had to walk because they had no car to get them to the top. But why hadn’t I read about a parking lot at the top if there was one? Hmmm
The road became narrower and we became very suspicious that something was not right.
We came to the end of the path, for how can one call it a road(?) and KNEW this was not right – for to our left were the stairs leading to the fortification. ð
Finding a little spot on the road just a bit back from where we were, we parked our car and did the cheater’s version of getting to the top. There are 2 ways to get to the top from the main road far far below – both from different locations. You can climb stairs (very exhausting judging by several we saw who were quite red and huffing) or you can walk up a paved incline. Of course, we found the 3rd way. Just drive right to it on your own little path. ðĪŠ
And Salzburg Cathedal? Well, it was nowhere to be found on that hill. Instead it was a fortification wall – Burgerwehr Fortification – and if you walked far enough along you could see Hohensalzburg Fortress.
A part of the Burgerwehr fortress wall.

I gave up on schnitzel. I tried it twice, once in Vienna and once in Salzburg thinking it was the quality of restaurant I was at that the first time that made it less than spectacular, but I don’t think so. Russell equates it with chicken tenders but I would say it doesn’t even match up to that.

What’s your experience with schnitzel?

I am always watching your site it is fun to see what is going on with you and your family! <3
Don't you love google ð at least it saved you a very long walk haha ð I have to leave a little note about the schnitzel because I love schnitzel, but… you must have a mushroom sauce to go with it or it is dry and not very appetizing! So next time ask for a (Pilz Sauce) and also some restaurants are better than others so just depends, I have had a schnitzel that mushroom sauce couldn't even fix :/ but there is some that can be very tasty (with mushroom sauce) ð hope this helps for the next time you try a Schnitzel!! ð
Looks like you had a nice trip, Austria is very pretty!! ð

Okay, a mushroom sauce it is. Next time! Austria was a very special time for Russell and myself; we loved it. It was great to hear from you!

Gotta love Google Maps…it took us for a run a couple of times too. Some of the roads we were on were very narrow and sometimes dirt so sometimes you didn’t know whether you are going right or now. One time we pulled onto a road, “a’hem…it turned out to be a walking/bike path! Whoops! Loved the Alps in Austria…tho Switzerland still stays in 1st place. Our best Schnitzel was in Germany in the middle of a little village after leaving the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Oh, that would have been funny to find out you were on a bike path. I think we did that too! We’re doing Switzerland with you.(smiles) We hope too anyways.
