Make Your Own Magnetic Chalkboard
I am so excited to share this project that I did this past week. There are times when I actually am successful at a craft project and my expectations and reality are one and the same. It actually kind of shocks me when that happens. 🙂
In our stairwell, which leads downstairs to our guest quarters, I wanted to put up a collage of frames displaying pictures of family and friends. As I started to think about it, I realized I would always have the same pictures in the frames and what I really wanted was to change it up every now and again. So I thought about making a magnetic chalkboard but I wasn’t too sure of how to go about doing it.
In my search, I came across Martha Stewart showing how to make one but with the added bonus of it being a chalkboard as well. You can see her tutorial here.
Here’s how I did it.
My hubby picked me up the largest piece of galvanized sheet metal they sold at Home Depot.
I sprayed on chalk paint, let it dry, then sprayed it again, giving it two layers.
I purchased a frame from Michael’s which included the backing and glass for 50% off. It was a better buy than getting one with no backing at Hobby Lobby.
The frame was black but I was kind of wanting a pop of color around the chalkboard instead of black on black. So, I decided to paint it Robin’s Egg.
I am sorry I do not have step-by-step pictures. I just get into the project and totally forget about pictures till it’s too late. 🙂
After the spray paint dried, I then took sandpaper to try to distress it a bit. I made sure I also went over the edges of the frame because I really like that distressed look in those areas.
Some of my distressing up close.
Next project I would like to do is to make some special magnets for the board. Who knows, maybe I’m on a roll and they’ll turn out, too. 🙂 Martha couldn’t lead me wrong could she?

That looks great! Could use one for our entryway – thanks for the idea. 🙂

Glad you like it, Emily! I’m sure you’ll love it if you decide to make one. They’re so many ways to use the chalkboard – menus, greetings, messages, etc.

That looks great! I just did the same for my winter mantel except its not magnetic. It’s fun coming up with and trying new crafts. great job!
