  • An Award for Gaining Weight Quickly

Having a steer as a 4-H project is more time consuming and intimidating than any other livestock project but Serenity wanted to give it a try at least for 1 year. Sir Kendrick was a sweetheart weighing only 750 pounds when he arrived here at the farm last February. He was very sociable and if he heard us outside he would push the top half of his barn door open so he could see us. One time I heard all this noise and wondered what it could be. It was just Sir Kendrick bellowing because he could hear us all in the backyard. To get him ready for the show…

  • 3 Things We Can Learn from 4-H

For the last 8 months or so our little farm had some additional critters besides our normal chickens, goats, cats and dog. As part of the kids’ 4-H projects… …we had Sir Kendrick… and   …Bacon & Daisy… I think 4-H is a great program and for those that are looking for ways to make the most out of your projects, you can also let this count for animal husbandry. In 4-H they learn what it takes to make their pig grow to the proper weight besides basic information about the species of animal they’re raising. They are required to give an oral presentation on something related to the…

  • When Your Children Grow Up

Although there comes a time when you must release the arrows in your quiver, it’s still difficult when change comes to your family that you have nurtured and watched over for so many years. My son Wesley, who is 19,  embarked on his own adventure by deciding to go to Canada to work for a few months this summer. What a great opportunity for him to learn new skills and spend time with family. After the camp meeting, we had to say goodbye to him since he was going to be flying out of that area the next day and not traveling home with us. Last hugs for his sister.…

  • A Week of Making Memories & Being With New & Old Friends

After the wedding and reception, we headed to Indiana for the church camp arriving very late. As always it was a wonderful time. It had rained just enough that the ground was quite wet and where these kids played the grass was gone in just a matter of hours, leaving mud!  My nephew Lincoln didn’t mind it a bit. The fun thing about this youth camp is that if you have a desire to host a class where you share a skill or talent OR if you just want to do something fun with the kids, there’s plenty of opportunity. There were hair clinics (where you go to get your…

  • A Beautiful Wedding and Outdoor Reception

We awoke to an overcast sky but that was nothing new. Since we had arrived in Ohio, we had not seen the sun, but this was the wedding day and the reception was to be outdoors. Things did not look good but we were excited anyways about the upcoming day, even if it did rain. And it did. The whole drive to Michigan there was a continuous but gentle rain. About 35 minutes from the church, my husband says, “The alternator is having issues.” Oh, no, this was not a good thing! We pulled off the next exit to get gas because we were on E completely and was fortunate…
