Trips We've Made

Winter Fun in the Great White North

In my last post, my son married his dream girl and what a special occasion that was for my family.

We were so privileged to have my entire family (except for two of my nieces and their small children) travel from the States to Canada for the wedding of Seth & Jessica.

After we sent the newlyweds off on their honeymoon, the family had a few days left to relax have an adventure!

We were treated to a wonderful day by my husband’s sister, Meda and brother-in-law, Tim. They are just amazing hosts and we always have such a good time when we are there.

Don’t doubt that there are some fun things to do in the winter time… even in the Great White North (we took a trip in 2014 and had such a memorable time – Part I of our 2014 trip and Part II of our 2014 trip) – and on this particular day the experience was repeated for the rest of my family. Thank you, Tim & Meda!

After putting on multiple layers and going through bins of winter clothing to dress ourselves for the cold day, we were finally ready to head out. Herding our slow moving “train” of 30+ people was not a fun job but Tim handled it all admirably and patiently, I might add. ๐Ÿ™‚

Our destination? We were headed across frozen Lake Manitoba to where Tim was raised and then driving a bit further to have a hot-dog roast.

Driving on the ice can be a little unnerving your first time but with the ice being 3′ thick and the weather still so cold, there’s not much to worry about – so they tell me. haha

You feel like you are in the Arctic.

Once we arrived at our destination, scouts were sent out for some wood for the fire and hot dog sticks…

And I’m not even kidding when I say that in 15 minutes, the fire was started and the hot dog sticks were ready to go.

Doesn’t it take gasoline to start a fire? Or at the very least 30 minutes of repeated efforts to get a fire going?

Can you tell I was impressed?

My little munchkin (grandson). He loved it.

Cooking hot dogs right is an apparent concern of ours mine.

Maybe because with my first one I did a royal job of burning it?

Commercial ice fishing in action.

Pulling out one of the fish nets after drilling through the 3′ ice with an auger.

Does kissing a fish have the same results as kissing a frog?

Northern Pike fish and one really evil looking one in the mix.

I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t even want to eat that one!

There may not be many that live in the small town where most of these kids come from but they’re just like all other young people everywhere. They enjoy laughter, friends and games.

I so enjoyed hearing my nieces and kids singing around the piano.

I actually celebrated a birthday while in Canada and was pretty royally spoiled.

Not only did I have an amazing foot and hand reflexology massage but I was given beautiful bouquets from my sweetheart and son.

Creme Brulee dessert made by my talented sister-in-law.ย  Was it ever tasty!

More cousins… There’s a lot of us!

And then it was time to say farewell and head back home, which only took us 4 days of driving… Oh wait, was that only two-and-a-half days???

Wow, that sure looks like a trip to remember! I’d definitely be a bit nervous driving on that ice though – I dont even like the roads near me when it’s been frosty!

Yes, where we live in Arizona, the traffic slows to a crawl if there’s a hint of ice but in Canada they don’t even consider it.

The ice on the lake is 3 feet thick and there are ways they test it to make sure it’s safe to drive on and things they look for that are indications that the ice is starting to break up once the weather gets warmer but crossing the lake in winter is a daily occurrence for many of them.

      Thanks for stopping by!

What a lovely time and hated we had to miss out on that part. Was hoping you’d show more of where Tim grew up, area. Sure was great to see everyone again and glad we got in what we did, though it was short. We sure will treasure that last morning with Seth, that we had. A memory we’ll forever hold dear.

I love hearing from you! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
