Our Havasupai Hike – Day 3

After walking in to Havasupai and enjoying the beautiful sights it had to offer, it was time to leave. I had wanted to make our departure at the bright and early hour of 5 am to beat the heat but I was outvoted. The only ones who were with me in leaving early was my 9 year old Audrey and another 13 year old boy, so I opted to wait for everyone. And it turned out fine since the weather was not too hot at all.

After Scripture and prayer, we took a last group shot…

and started getting ready for our hike out.

and we were off, leaving as we were ready – in a staggered fashion. Nothing planned, just how it worked out.

But first there were some who had to stop and mail their postcards. It’s part novelty since Havasupai offers the only pony express mail service in the nation.

Eventually, you leave the narrowed canyon and come to a sign with an arrow that says “Hill-top”, which simply means you are heading in the right direction!

It also means you will be starting the 1 mile hike that is the steepest, toughest part of the whole 8 miles.

I’ve probably am only half-way up at this point but Wesley is a different story.

He has already been to the top and has come back to help anyone who needs their pack carried.

And then who should we meet up as we’re climbing, huffing and puffing along with red faces, but a Native wearing this shirt that says, “Rest later” while he’s going down.

I found it quite humorous but fitting.

Look how far we’ve come!

And in a few more steps we will be out!!

We had stocked a big white ice chest with juices, cappuccinos and waters and covered with plenty of ice so that it would stay cold for 3 days. As people arrived at the top, they helped themselves to some cool refreshment.

Oh, these young people were just so sooo tired.

And thus concludes our wonderful 3 day adventure to Havasupai.

But the story won’t end there because we’re already making plans to go back next year if the Lord wills!
