Holidays,  Our Family

Cranberries, Onions & My Thanksgiving Table Runner

That was really cruel of me… to write a post about how we are killing ourselves with our white flour and sugar right on the brink of one of the biggest holidays of the year.  Really, I didn’t plan it that way, it just happened.  Promise.

I started the food for our Thanksgiving meal yesterday.  I’m using mostly recipes from Nourishing Traditions and have never tried any of it before.  My family will love it, I’m sure. probably ban me from making anything ever from NT.  They’re good sports but I guess Thanksgiving’s like the sacred cow – you just don’t mess too much with tradition.

I made the Onion Cranberry Compote last night and I was kinda looking at it sideways because it’s very different from the normal cranberry relish I love.  Onions(?) with my cranberry?  I’ll get back with you on that after our dinner this Sunday.

I got the Ginger Carrots grated and its in a mason jar fermenting.  My daughter had her opportunity to look at me sideways when I told her what was going on with the carrots.  This is 4 cups of carrots but it “melted”?, “shrunk”? – I’m not really sure of the word I’m looking for here – down into this amount.  I guess I’ll want to have another side since this won’t go far.  Next to the carrots is my creme faiche that’s called for in a few of the recipes I’m making.

I can’t wait to set my table.  I have the cutest turkey plates I got form World Market last year on clearance.  I think I paid $.69 each and the original price was $5.99.  It was my lucky day.  I never find those kinds of deals for something I actually want.

And I’m excited to have finished my simple project Thanksgiving table runner. I got the idea from Heidi at Frantically Simple. She has some directions at her blog for how to put it together.

The green material was from my grandma (the kid’s great grandmother).  I have a total of 6 turkeys and the middle of the runner has an empty place for a centerpiece. I did my runner a little different from Heidi in that I made my turkey’s go both directions. This way it’s viewable from either side.

Off to put some more goodies together from NT. 🙂

I love your runner. Great ideas to make them go both ways and keep a space for the centerpiece. I was kind of scratching my head over that once I’d finished mine last year. Adorable!

Cute plates you found!! Would be hard to get away from the traditional Thanksgiving fare and your family might wish you read the book in January and forgot about it come November ha ha ( just kidding) but my hats off to you for going through all the time and energy to do it different and you will have to let us know how it went. 🙂 Knowing your family there will be no complaints 🙂 I do know we can all do better when it comes to sugar for sure but I sure love Derby pie (Toll House pie) and love my moms dressing (that’s stuffed in the turkey and also unhealthy they say) (she makes both) Anyhow, Happy Thanksgiving and the memories will be great and that’s the main thing. I’m thankful for you as a friend! Enjoy!

Mary, we had a good chuckle over your comment.

I so appreciate you, too. You’re a great lady and someone I can really look up to. Thanks for being such a wonderful example.

😀 I was thinking about your “perfect timing” the other day, too. 😛 I guess there’s really no “convenient” day to start eating healthy. The runner is a really creative idea. Looks like it turned out well. 🙂

I love hearing from you! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
