A Simple Project and a Healthy Thanksgiving Menu
We’re celebrating Thanksgiving early. As in 2 days from now. It’s going to be a small affair, (just my little family) but we’re going to make some memories anyways!
I’ve got plans to make this table runner that Frantically Simple made for her own family…
And of course, I always get excited about the food. This year I’m going to do something different. I’m going to make the majority of the meal using recipes from the book Nourishing Traditions.
Here’s the menu plan presently… (NT stands for Nourishing Traditions)
Turkey
Onion Cranberry Compote – NT pg.392 (this is to replace the sugary cranberry relish I normally make and love!)
Mashed Potatoes (was going to make NT recipe on pg.401 but couldn’t find celery root at the store)
Ginger Carrots – NT pg.95 (NT recommends a lacto-fermented side to aid in digestion if everything else that you’re serving is cooked)
Baby Spinach Salad – NT pg.178
Whole Wheat Rolls
Desserts:
Pumpkin Pie – NT pg.562
Whole Pecan Tart – NT pg.563
Vanilla ice cream – NT pg.550
Persimmon ice cream – NT pg.552
I would like one more green vegetable but I’m not sure what at this point. I’d better figure it out quickly since I only have 2 days till our dinner! Maybe you all can help me out.
My table runner is coming along nicely. I think I may be able to show the finished product tomorrow.
So, what’s a must for you on your Thanksgiving table? A particular side that you look forward to every year or a dessert that you just have to have? Share in the comments. (comments are at the top now)

The menu sounds lovey! For another green, how about brussel sprouts sauteed with bacon? Can’t wait to see your finished runner!

Heidi, That sounds delectable!

Are you using a handprint cut-out from your children? What a cute idea!
Your menu sounds deicious and HEALTHY! I find most of the NT recipes to be tasteful except the salad dressings, mayo and one or two other recipes. I haven’t tried any of the lacto-fermented recipes. I have a ton of sauerkraut to use and we use a lot of yogurt.
If we have Thanksgiving with my family in Ohio, some of my favorite UNHEALTHY must-haves are: chicken & home-made noodles, cranberry salad (with tons of sugar), blueberry pretzel salad & lime-pinapple fluff. We ate a pretty plain diet growing up (a lot of beans), but we always had a huge Thanksgiving dinner every year.

Lily, I traced the kids’ hands onto paper and used that as a pattern for the fabric.
My family will probably never forget this Thanksgiving. Poor things. It’s going to be a real break from the normal fare we usually have. Blame it on Dr. Weston Price’s book! 🙂 The chicken and home-made noodles sounds so good. I’ve never heard of a blueberry pretzel salad, only a strawberry one and it tasted quite good – the cream cheese was what made it, IMO.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Lily
Sorry for all the typos! I’m going to have to start proof-reading my replies.

Never noticed them, Lily. 🙂 I just am always so happy to hear from you.
