31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration Day 4: A DIY Pantry Shelf Organizer for the Pantry
Yesterday you got to see how I restored some order back to the pantry. I was able to make a shelf organizer for all my canned foods that is not only useful but inexpensive to boot!
Here’s what the finished shelf looks like.
My son, seeing this picture, said, “You’re going to post that picture? Look at that can on top.” Yes, I could have made this look picture perfect I suppose but hey, who’s going to have the perfect number of cans all the time(?), so I just decided to keep things real.
To make your own shelf organizer so that your cans are at different heights, you will need to purchase a 2×4. And that’s it. You can either have your local Home Depot cut the board into the lengths you need or do the task yourself once you bring it home.
Here is an example of what your cans will look like using just one 2×4.
Here’s what it would look like without the shelf organizer.
And here’s one more picture showing how I did this. Your highest shelf, situated at the back, will be stacked with 2 lengths of wood. In front of these 2 pieces you will place 1 length of wood for your second level. Your third level will be the shelf itself.
Your cost for a 2″ x 4″ x 8′ long is around $2.25. The length of your shelves will dictate the amount of lumber you will need, of course. Cost for an expandable shelf organizer bought at your local home improvement store – $17. Ouch!
I think mine will do just fine.

Nice! I never thought about the wood, and your pantry looks fabulous! I did the same thing with my spices, only I used boxes (as the spices were light enough to where I could use empty sandwich bag boxes.) I’ll have to remember that, and yes, I’d love to hear something on an organized refrigerator! Or perhaps how to keep pots and pans or storage bowls organized (especially their lids!)

Hey thanks for your super nice comments! I enjoyed looking through your 31 days of kitchen inspiration. I could so use a few days to organize mine!

Looks like the shelves in store displays! Pretty! To reduce the cost, maybe we can make use of old books and boxes

Yes, you could use boxes but what I like about the 2×4’s are they are almost exactly the same width as the cans. Because of this, you are able to utilize more shelf space.

This is such a great idea! I’m in the middle of organizing our new pantry, and I’ve already informed my hunky farmguy that I need to ‘borrow’ some 2x4s. 😉

Susan, That’s what I did. I just searched around till I found some and then I permanently “borrowed” them. I think you’ll like how it works.
