Farewell, Granny Smith

Yesterday we laid to rest this Granny Smith apple tree that we planted 10 years ago when Seth (18yo) was only 8.

We have the only green patch (our lawn) for miles around so we battle regularly with free roaming cattle that are grazing on the National Forest nearby.

Seth liked Granny Smith’s and asked, all those years ago, if we would get one for him. So, we did. It was always a runt of a tree probably due to the fact that cows came to visit it even back then.

Seth had to be the man and do the deed.

Now in its place we have…

I’m thinking a pine tree would look good here. And cows don’t eat those, right?

Farewell to a tree that never gave one apple to a little boy who waited on it for 10 years.

The result of this travesty?

The pampas grass is imprisoned so that it has a chance to grow big and get those gorgeous plumes.

And at the end of our back yard we have created a barricade. I’m not sure who will be kept out – us or the cattle.

UPDATE: We arrived home last night and our question as to who would be kept out was answered. Three cows were enjoying a little lawn candy to top off their supper of dry grass and bushes. They had made it past our rope blockade. Aghhh!

I love hearing from you! Thank you for taking the time to comment.
