Why We Don't Do Candles

Girls usually are more inclined than boys to want fancy things and just have a innate desire to make things look nice. For example my daughter, at age 10, did a post on her blog on how to make a goblet look even better. From quite young she’s tried different hairdo’s. Like this one… (a little dark but can you see all the barrettes and tall ponytail sticking up?)

As the years have gone by she has developed some quite sophisticated styles all on her own – styles I haven’t even been able to do! Oh, dear!

Without killing the point too much I’m sure most of us agree that girls just like things pretty. – from clothes to hair to room decorations to table settings.

My Serenity decided while her grandparent’s were here over the holidays, that we needed a candle light dinner. I do like a little light on my food but since we have no dimmer switch on the dining room light it’s kind of an all or nothing decision. Bright lights or candlelight.

Serenity placed about 6-7 candles and votive cups on our table – interspersed amongst the food. It actually lit up the table pretty well having that many. While things would go well with the typical adult male, it’s a different story with 4 boys who haven’t quite mastered their love of anything to do with FIRE.

My desire for no candles on my table was reaffirmed once again. Just so you understand where I’m coming from, I’ve listed my reasons below for why I don’t do candles. Maybe you can relate?

I don’t do candles because I don’t want to smell smoke the whole evening from candles being blow out and re-lit over and over.

I don’t do candles because I don’t want to scrape wax spots off the table for the next two weeks. ("Watching the wax melt is so interesting when candles are held at an angle, mom.")

I don’t do candles because I don’t like that some certain somebodies like to study the candles so closely they singe their hair,

And finally, I don’t do candles because when you have candles you have one of those little hand lighter thingey’s. And if you have one of those little hand lighter’s you’ll have someone that wants to light it UNDER the table curious to see how the flame would look coming up through a crack.

Candles in my future? Maybe when they’re 25!
