Dutch Oven Cooking

I have had my Lewis & Clark Dutch Oven since 2004.  I don’t know what exactly inspired me to get one in the first place, I think I was just intrigued to try things the old-fashioned way when we go on our hunting trips.

The problem is I’m not really wanting to have a burned mess when I’m out in the woods with no back-up provisions to satisfy the troops.  So, I haven’t used it much.  In the 3 years since then I have tried a green chile stew and some popcorn.

This year I decided to get it out again from its storage place in our travel trailer and wash off the dust and feathers that had stuck to it.  (That’s one effect of beds being in the same room as your kitchen – feathers fly through the air and land in rather strange places.)

I gathered the briquettes and some charcoal lighter fluid and headed outside to dig down into the dirt a little bit to make a hole for the oven.  We live on rock here so I didn’t dig too far.  I placed my briquettes in the hole, sprinkled starter fluid on and lit the whole thing.  Then I came back inside.

I left my 2 young ‘uns outside.  Well when they saw the flames die out they figured that was the end of it and so they covered it up with sand.  I was inside happily preparing the mixture for the apples, thinking my briquettes were getting hot.  But Justus, the little stinker was covering up the whole thing!

Back out I went to get them unburied and started again.  Still not much success.  That’s when Zachary arrived on the scene.  Zachary always comes up with a solution and it might be a crazy one but sometimes his ideas really do work.

I came into the house to look on You Tube for how to light briquettes  when Zachary came to tell be that the briquettes were ready to cook on.  I go outside to find this!

He had got the big Shop-Vac and was blowing air on the whole thing and let me tell you those briquettes really liked it!  They were sparking all over the place.

It did the trick though.  I was able to put my oven on the briquettes and make Baked Stuffed Apples.

Now, how about visiting my new recipe blog, A Pinch of This, A Dash of That to see how to make it?

Thanks for the nice comment! We did have a great summer. This was the first time we've been to Hilton Head… we LOVED it, and I would HIGHLY recommend it. It was a great family place, you could do as much or as little as you want. We went in June, and it was fabulous because it was warm and sunny the whole time. Previously we went to Kiawah every year, which is about 45 miles north of Hilton Head, so I am familiar with the weather even though this was first time at Hilton Head. I think June is just about the best time, because any earlier may not be hot enough to really be in the ocean a bunch, but any later and it is HOT HOT HOT. May would probably be really nice too, though…. we went in March one year when I was in high school and the beach was pretty chilly. We stayed in a house in the Palmetto Dunes area and LOVED it. It was big enought for everyone to stay together and we had a pool… my kids were in heaven!

    Blessings,
