Our Family

Our Not-So-Relaxing Sunday Afternoon Drive

What we had envisioned was not reality.  It happened like this.  Our daughter Serenity went home with my parents from hunting camp and spent a week with them.  The time came to go pick her up.

Zachary has his driving permit now as of  2 weeks ago, and decided it would be an excellent time to hone his driving skills.

My dear hubby thought it sounded quite nice to have a chauffeur.  Me and him could read and talk, maybe even watch a Reb Bradley video on our laptop.  I said, "Wait a minute!  He’s a newbie driver.  You have to keep a close eye on him."  I knew a video was out of the question but reading  a real possibility.

Oh, sure!  What we thought would be a nice relaxing ride was anything but.  Forget reading.  I had to work on keeping the stomach feeling level.  I told my son I would start having to wear those wristbands that ward off motion sickness.  With him as my driver it was like being rocked back and forth but not in a smooth way.  He’s still trying to convince me it was the wind but I’m not buying it.  No, sirree.  Do I look that naive?  I mean how can a 5mph wind affect you that much.  (Rocking BACK and FORTH, BACK and FORTH.)  Ugh!

So, that was problem #1 – not counting that you have to be on the alert and watch for speed limit signs, red lights, green arrows, changing lanes and on and on.  There’s only so much they can concentrate on at one time.  He’s a man, remember, just in miniature.  You know how that goes.  If a man can think of more then one thing at a time he’s doing pretty good.  So we had to help him out.

Then there was the moment when our lane ended because of road construction.  Dear son never noticed the signs until we were right up on them.  Not a problem if you don’t have two semi’s barrelling towards you.  With some gentle guidance fervent demands from my husband to stay right where he was (at a complete stop), we let them have the road.  (Aren’t we so nice?)

You’ll be glad to know we made it to the meeting place where we met up with my parents and our sweet daughter, had a good supper and headed back home.  And you know what??  We let the dear boy drive again.  The smoothness of the ride back is something to be remarked upon.  That 5mph wind must have died down while we were in the restaurant.  Whatever the case, my stomach enjoyed it much more.

What about the relaxing?  Well that happened when we got home.   (heaving a big sigh of relief)

Update:  I read this entry to my son Zachary before I posted it and he laughed and said, "But, Mom, it was more then a 5mph wind."  Ha!  Still trying to fool me but I’m too smart for him.
