Camping Trip to Hawley Lake

Camping… ahhh, Let’s get away for a few days and just relax…ahhh. What doesn’t enter the mind at that moment is all the preparation that goes into the day after making such a

restful decision. After the decision is made the fun begins. Okay, what’s the weather going to be like? Hmmm. The Internet says it will be about 66 degrees in the day and in the 30’s at night. After all we’ll be in the high country at 8,000 feet.

I must get myself and the two little ones ready. Out come the jackets, hats, and pajamas that can double as long johns during the day since they might not keep their jackets on. Then try to find warm clothes. Where we live we haven’t yet hit the real cold time so I have to go scrounge around looking for appropriate clothing. Here’s a 3-6 months outfit for AE. I know she should have an outfit that’s 9 months, but hey, it looks extra roomy and I’ve got it in my hands. I won’t have to look anymore. I can check that job off. Now diapers. Take extra. I mean you never know if she’s going to have diarrhea this weekend or not so I’d better take oodles!

We are taking our travel trailer. Good. A few less things I have to think about packing. But still, they must round up their sleeping bags from wherever they have them and get them back into the trailer, grab a pillow if they want one, fishing poles and camp chairs. All these things should be in the trailer already but what should be and what is are two completely different things around here.

We’re going camping with several other families so meals at supper time will be a joint effort. I’m to bring enchiladas for one night. Yes, as a matter-of-fact they are left over from our Africa Day! J How’d you guess?

My reading bag must be made ready. In goes any books I’m reading, any I think I might want to read, and a few more in case I read everything else I’ve brought. Ha! I’m sure I have at least 12 different things in the bag.

Oh, we must take the canoe. After all we’ll be at the lake. So, as usual, we are loaded down. A big travel trailer filled with all of our paraphernalia and a canoe strapped to the top of the truck in a rather unique way. We’re used to that though. We somehow manage to always look rather unusual, like the grapes of wrath barreling down the highway.

UPDATE #1: It is Sunday as I write this and I haven’t had a chance to read any of my 12 books (besides the Bible) yet. If you can believe it I haven’t even had a decent walk.

You might be wondering ,“Just what have you been doing?” Well, I cooked breakfast and made sure I ate it (eating is one of my favorite pastimes ). A friend drove an hour-an-half from the nearest town to come see me and spend the day with me. That was a treat. So, maybe things haven’t completely worked out like I thought but

restful get-away’s can come in many different packages and I for one have enjoyed unwrapping this one.

UPDATE #2: We’re all going home with sunburns. I didn’t realize that at higher elevations you can burn easier. On Monday, a few hours before we left, I was able to take a ride with my hubby in the canoe. What fun!  The kids had a great time meeting some other boys their age, fishing, and scouting for the elk that we could hear bugling during the day. It was a very enjoyable weekend.

It sounds like y’all had a wonderful time! We like to go camping in the fall when the temps are cooler. Of course it can be damp and rainy which makes for an interesting camping trip! 🙂

I’m happy you were able to have a nice time with your family and friends.

I love those sweet family times that make great memories. It’s a lot of work to get ready to “relax” though isn’t it? It’s so worth it though. Glad you had a great time.

You sound like me with your packing! I am always taking lots of books – I almost never get to read them.

Hope you recover from those sunburns soon.
