• Susanna Wesley – Mother to John and Charles Wesley

Susanna Wesley lived from 1669-1742.  She had 19 children within 21 years although only 10 of them lived beyond childhood years. Kathy McReynolds has written a book called  “Susanna Wesley”.   It's part of the Women of Faith series and I found it to be well written and an enjoyable read. It is said that Susanna prayed for two hours a day!  Here is an excerpt from a letter she wrote to her oldest son Samuel.   I exhort you, as I am your faithful friend; and I command you, as I am your parent, to use your utmost diligence to make your calling and election sure; to be faithful to your God; and after I have said…

  • I'm Not On Schedule – BooHoo!!

Schedules always look so good on paper. I don’t feel I’m being unrealistic in what I expect of my children in a day. I’m following Ambleside Online’s plans for all my children. But somehow, at least when it involves our homeschool, my plans go awry. Many times my husband will have the children work with him doing construction type jobs. Excellent learning experience. But, how do I balance this with the schoolwork needing to be done? We started this years school the last week in July. I did this because of past experiences of running behind schedule. Even with starting early, I have some of my children still finishing their…

  • On Nature Study and Antelope

On Monday of last week, for our Nature Study we learned about antelope. I thought this would be fitting since my son, WE, would be going antelope hunting that Friday. I read some information to the children that I got off the Internet and then we played a game that I had about on tiredmom’s blog. I may have tweaked it some from the original idea but here is how we did it. We stood around in a circle outside. We had a baseball that we would throw to the person next to us and as the person received the baseball they had to state a fact  they had just…

  • This Mouse is Fixin' to Play

Very early this morning my hubby and 3 oldest boys left for an antelope hunt. WE, age 11, was drawn for this hunt. The odds of being drawn are below 10% so they are all quite envious of WE’s opportunity. They won’t be back for a couple of days. Why is it, when they have to clean their rooms everyday, that it can get totaled so quickly. I go in there this morning and find: 6 shirts (WE‘s, all in bottom of closet) 2 pants (WE’s again) 2 pairs of dirty socks 2 birthday cards Hand-weights Kleenex Chess piece Racquet (used for latest sport at our house – swatting wasps)…

  • Animals at the Rehabilitation Center in South Africa

Our family went to South Africa in March.  While there we went to the M*h*l*holo Rehabilitation Center as I said here in this post.    They have about 3,000 visitors go through their center every month. They also have students who come there from all over the world to be trained to work with injured wildlife.   Here are a few photos of our visit there.   Humphrey, the baby hippo wandered around freely much to our delight.  This African bush pig was busy nibbling on everyone’s shoelaces.  (We had an update on Baby Humphrey this last week when the Joneses were here.  Humphrey is now about 3′ tall and doing…
