  • Strawberries – Harmful or Beneficial to Your Health?

    July 19, 2011 / 1 Comment

Oh, what would it be like to have fresh berries every day all summer?  I think  heavenly.  Beautiful red strawberries are such a favorite of mine and as part of my quest to produce more of the food we consume, I have started researching them.  Now, more than ever, I am really excited about the thought of growing our own. I hope you read this article to the end, (It’s not that long!) and come away with a new appreciation for the strawberry God created.  Health Benefits of Eating Strawberries First let me remind you of the good things Strawberries offer.  Some you may know already, but there were some facts that were new…

  • Pizza Margherita Using Basil from the Garden

    July 15, 2011 / 1 Comment

{Before Cooking} Easy to Prepare Great Tasting Healthy when using pastry whole wheat flour  *NO white flour needed* I have to confess that one of the things that keeps me from making pizza more often is a mental block I have about making the dough.  It sounds time consuming like making bread, so I just never DO it! But really, this dough took me only about 10-15 minutes tops to mix together.  I used my Bosch for all the kneading and was able to do this step earlier in the afternoon, before running an errand.  I covered it and placed it in my refrigerator so that it could do a slow rise.  A few…

  • Relaxing While Working in the Garden & A Cute Idea for Soap

    July 11, 2011 / 2 Comments

Things are going to be a little different around here this summer.  You see, when we came back from Ohio we left our oldest son there to work for the summer (he’s done this for 3 summers now) and then Zachary, my second born, has went to Sierra Vista to work for the summer on the military base.  Gardening Help What do you do when you gardener leaves?  You get desperate and start learning how to garden yourself.  I’ve been reading a book called Small Plot, High Yield Gardening:  How to Grow Like a Pro, Save Money, and Eat Well by Turning Your Back (or Front or Side) Yard Into an…

  • 4,000 Miles, 76 Hours of Driving & a Look at the Tornado in Joplin, MO

    July 9, 2011 / 1 Comment

We are home as of Tuesday driving a total of 4,000 miles round trip and 76 hours of driving.  We had a wonderful time while in Ohio; it just went too quickly.  I took a lot of pictures -one of the joys of owning a digital is you don’t have to worry about rolls of film and the cost of development.  Also, my photos are what helps me remember things I would normally forget.  I love my camera! There were 15 of us who journeyed to Ohio for the youth camp.  Everyone was great travellers.  No needing to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes, complaining because they were hungry or…

  • Old Fashioned Oatmeal with Apples, Raisins and Honey-Toasted Walnuts

    June 24, 2011 / 3 Comments

If the thought of ordinary oatmeal sounds unappealing, try this variation and see what you think.  Do go to the extra effort and make the honey-toasted walnuts.  They’re scrumptious! The recipe is from Epicurious. Old-Fashioned Oatmeal with Apples, Raisins and Honey-Toasted Walnuts Ingredients: 1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 1 tablespoon honey 3 cups water 2 cups old-fashioned oats 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup unsweetened apples juice 1 cup finely chopped peeled apple 1/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar 1/4 cup raisins 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup nonfat vanilla yogurt 1.  Stir chopped walnuts in small nonstick skillet over medium heat until lightly toasted, about 3 minutes. Drizzle honey over and stir…
