Trips We've Made

An Anniversary Get-Away

I love get-aways with my husband and although they’re usually just a day or two, this time he took me away for a whole week!

In full disclosure I must tell you that it’s for our 25th anniversary that was 3 years ago! Yes, it’s true. It’s in honor of our 25th anniversary even though we just passed our 28th wedding anniversary a month ago.

The beautiful state of Colorado called our name and so we came – besides the fact that we had a week to use with a timeshare we have. 🙂

It was a 12 hour drive and we passed through some beautiful country in Arizona, no less! Our home state that we love.

Such unique beauty

There are some beautiful mountain passes on I-70 but the first real stop we made was in Eagle, Colorado where we went to Pickup’s Pizza Company for which I had seen good reviews.

We took our pizza and went to the Visitor Center which was located right next to the river and enjoyed our little lunch.

The view across the river. That little building looks like it could go in the river any day.

You wonder sometimes when Google Maps takes you on roads like this to get to your final destination!

Gore Canyon is 6 miles long and has canyon walls rising 3,000 feet. It was a great challenge to build the railroad for this section of the Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railroad. To survey the canyon the men had to have steel nerves and great stamina. As the men dangled from rope dropped over the cliff, they drove steel pegs into the granite. Scary!

Logs tied with steel cables were floated downriver, hoisted up the walls and then fastened to the pegs. Not one life was lost in the doing of this. (That made me happy to read that!)

This whole area of Colorado was where the mountain man Jim Bridger lived, hunted and guided expeditions for 46 years.

So picturesque.

I love rugged mountains.

The area we are in is geared for winter tourism. Snow skiing abounds – except not right now. Apparently they call this their “mud season” because they don’t have snow and it’s not yet their summer.

Grand Lake, Colorado

The winter lodgings here in Granby, where we are staying, are plentiful and it’s not even a big ski town. It’s interesting to see how much these towns depend upon winter tourism.

Beautiful homes! I wish I could tour them.

Some views from the condo we are staying at…

Cattails right outside our door… so much beauty in nature.

One day we drove up to Steamboat Springs.  Steamboat Springs has produced more Winter Olympians than any other place in the nation. This is the largest ski jumping complex in the United States. Although the picture is not the best, it is one big hill. I found it quite riveting. They can actually practice here year-round.

And then guess what happened?

It snowed.

For 2 days.

But my husband still got a little relaxing in at the poolside.

With his sparkling natural fruit drink.

Nothing like getting to be with your best friend for 28 years. It’s the best.
