How to Tell if an Egg is Fertile or Not
Did you know you can determine if an egg is fertile or not fertile by looking at the germ spot? The germ spot is the white spot on the yolk. The non-fertile germ spot contains only the female’s cells and looks like a solid white spot. In a fertile egg the germ spot contains both the female and male cells. This allows cells to divide and the spot grows while the rest of the egg is being built in the female’s oviduct. I have a multitude of interests, but one that is near the top of the list is cooking. I love to try new things and if you happen to be one of my fortunate/unfortunate guests I probably have at least one thing on the table I’ve never tried before, usually more then one though. Appreciating the Life and Music of George Frideric Handel
For Music Appreciation this week we read about George Frideric Handel 1685-1759. We read Hallelujah Handel by Douglas Cowling illustrated by Jason Walker. The artist did a beautiful job with the illustrations and the author wrote an interesting story. It was about 3 orphans who met Handel by carrying his bags. I only wished there had been more information about Handel interspersed throughout the story. We learned more about the orphans than Handel himself. I do think that what we did learn the children will not forget. Rapt Attention Handicraft work while listening. Even the four-year-old was tuned in to the story. What to Do With All Those Cucumbers?
Why did we plant so many cucumber seeds when Serenity is really the only cuke lover around here? Did we just want to see something, ANYTHING grow, beside a weed? Or maybe we were concluding our 8 year study seeing how long seeds could sit around before they would no longer germinate? It might have been a little of all the above, but mainly because I wanted to make pickles. Lo, and behold, all the seeds sprouted and produced plenty of cucumbers for me to make my pickles, along with a few more from a friend. I made wonderful Bread and Butter Pickles using my Grandma’s recipe. We love them on sandwiches and in pita pockets and…
