  • Trying Our Hand At Mosaic Art

    April 1, 2009 / No Comments

Mosaics have been found as early as 3rd century BC in Greece.  In these times they were used to decorate floors.  It wasn’t until the 4th century AD that this changed when Christians began to use mosaics to decorate the walls of their churches instead. Here are a few mosaics found from the 4th century. This one was found in an ancient Roman villa and is only a partial view.  The detail is amazing. Pictures were found at Wikimedia and Classical Mosaics.  If you want to see more just visit those links. Mosaics were quite the art form. So, since we’re studying the Middle Ages and we were in the 4th century we decided to try…

  • Tackle It Tuesday #150

    March 31, 2009 / 1 Comment

I’ve been out of the tackle loop for awhile but I’m back for this week’s Tackle #150. This week’s tackle was all about the Kitchen where I spend an inordinate amount of time. First off was to juice these wonderful lemons a couple of friends gave me and freeze it for future batches of fresh lemonade.  I freeze the concentrate in 1 cup portions which makes 1/2 gallon when I reconstitute it. I think it is just great that they can grow all these lemons on their own tree.  I would love to do that but we haven’t had too much success with the apple and plum trees we planted around here.  Still…

  • Growing Your Own Food

    March 25, 2009 / 1 Comment

I love the thought of growing my own food (or at least a part of it).  Check out this inspiring 8 minute video on how one family does it while living in the city on less than an acre.  Living the Real Simple Life   Copyright 2008 Treasuring the Moments

    March 18, 2009 / 1 Comment

What might happen if you live in the country with plenty of open space around with room for lots of people?  Why you just might play host to a Civil War reenactment group!  That is exactly what happened here at the homestead this past Saturday, March 14.  A group of 50 reenactors came and reenacted 2 battles to about a 100 of us homeschoolers.  They also gave about 25 boys a chance at becoming a soldier, complete with uniforms and guns which I think was the best thing about it all.  Unfortunately, the weather was not a typically beautiful Arizona day.  At one point we had a lot of people crammed into the…

  • Another March Birthday

    March 16, 2009 / 1 Comment

Eleven days after my birthday Zachary has his on the 12th.  How many boy’s would be this excited to get a pitch fork for their birthday?  Thank goodness he was easy to please.  It gets kind of hard trying to think of meaningful gifts that don’t cost an arm and a leg.  (Pitch forks only cost an arm.) Zachary, Your exuberance for life is something to behold.  You are a great example to your siblings and even me.  Keep walking with He who will lead you into paths of righteousness and everything will be alright.   Happy 17th Birthday!
