• Removing Spurs, Eartagging & Disbudding

Yesterday was a day of firsts for me since I’ve only recently became involved with our goats.  I’ve always enjoyed our farm animals but have wanted my kids (children not goat kids 🙂 ) to do the farm work for the experience as well as the wholesomeness of it all.  I think it’s good for them.  I’ve found it to be good for me, too.  It’s quite therapeutic to be outside and care for the goats.  It’s so easy for me to stay inside since it’s more comfy and because there’s always plenty of work to be done.  But now I have to get out there and feed the goats…

  • Raising Goats is Not All Easy

While gone to Ohio we had 3 baby kids born. We knew one of the mothers would be having kids but had no clue about the other.  All were healthy and are growing quite well.  Two bucklings and one doeling.  One of the bucks, (Charming, we call him) is getting quite frisky.  He runs and jumps in the air and just yesterday I saw him butting his head with the Boer doeling that was  born in May. This is Charming our 100% Nubian buckling. Charming has a twin which we named Bernard.  Bernard is strong but Charming is the bigger one of the two.  If you’re wondering if all our goats are named, they’re not. Not…

  • Pizza Dough the Minimalist's Way

I never have success making homemade pizza.  It’s always doughy on the bottom despite any pan or cookie sheet I choose to use.  Is it because I’m making it with whole wheat pastry flour??  I have pretty much given up on attempting it, it’s just too frustrating.  The tops always look beautiful but then we’ve got the problem of  it being (say it with me) “doughy.” However, I was given a recipe by my niece for an easy pizza dough that they said worked with whole wheat flour, was easy to make and tasted good.  Sounds like a winner.  After having the recipe in my collection and avoiding it for several…

  • Using Basil from the Garden in Pesto Sauce

When you think of pesto, do you think gourmet?  I guess I think it’s rather unique but in actuality it’s one of the easiest things to make.  We have basil growing in our garden.  It was getting overgrown and needed to be harvested.  If you never use the leaves it will quit producing and start to flower.  At that point your harvest time is pretty much over. Would you like me to show you how I made this delicious pesto sauce? First thing you need is some basil leaves which you  rinse/wash.  I didn’t worry too much about the brown on the leaves but if you don’t like the looks of it, just tear…

  • Sewing Unit Study – Day 2

Day 2 of our unit study was started off with a short children’s book.  (My daughter does not seem to be interested in history but she really liked this short & colorful children’s book.)  If you feel the history segment of this lesson is too short, you can of course, read a chapter book about Betsy Ross instead of the short children’s book suggested. History & Writing Read:  Betsy Ross – written and illustrated by Alexandra Wallner Make 5 pointed star from instructions in back of book and place in sewing notebook (this can be as simple as a composition book or a 3-ring binder that you add your own…
