I had heard of Horseshoe Bend a few years ago and have had it on my bucket list to visit ever since then and so after touring Lower Antelope Canyon and a dinner at El Tapatio, we drove to Horseshoe Bend which is only a few miles from the town of Page.
It was not what we expected. We are really not into crowds out in nature and this place had plenty.
I felt like we on a pilgrimage with the trail of people going to this scenic spot stretching out for quite a ways.
Everyone wants to be there at sunset and especially photographers. Unfortunately, there were so many clouds that there wasn’t much of a sunset.
There are no barriers so you can go right to the very edge… where there are drop-off’s that are hundreds of feet.
Horseshoe Bend is located at Lee’s Ferry – a very popular fishing area on the Colorado River.
The water looked so clear from up top.
Storm clouds in the distance made for a pretty dramatic picture.
The next day the weather continued almost the same – thunderstorms and some rain – not really what you want when you go to the lake, which in our case was Lake Powell.
Because it was not the best day to be at the lake we had this whole bay to ourselves for the girls to learn to drive a sea-doo which nobody had ever done before except for my girls. Even if we did have inclement weather, the water was warm, so that was very nice.
A sand mummy…
Audrey was a little hot-dog on the sea-doos and loved every minute. She didn’t want to quit.
A little fun on the intertube…
This little secret passage was one of the best but you have to do some exploring to find them. Lake Powell has towering sandstone cliffs everywhere and when you go through a channel it could dead end or it could open up and keep going. This particular passage looks like a complete dead end until you get to the end and go around this rock and then you see it keeps going. And it went and went, sometimes getting very narrow. It’s quiet in there, the water is so still and you are hidden from anyone who might come along since it’s like a secret passageway.
And that was our 2 day outing for our Castle Keeper girls who had worked so hard to complete all their challenges. It’s a treat to do this with them and we are all getting to explore our amazing state. There’s so many great places to visit!
Last year (2015) we went to Canyon de Chelly and two national parks.
In 2014 we went to Kartchner Caverns.
2017 – to be determined 🙂
