Castle Keepers,  Trips We've Made

Visiting One of the Most Famous Slot Canyons in the World

Seven girls met the requirements this year to go on our Castle Keeper end-of-year outing. The requirements were they could only miss one meeting and they had to complete all monthly challenges as well as all the culinary challenges which made a total of 18 challenges for the year.

Just in time we received our Castle Keeper t-shirts, so all the girls were able to wear them on the first day.

Our end-of-year outing is 2 two days to some place here in Arizona that I choose. This year I decided to take the girls to Lower Antelope Canyon (one of the most famous slot canyons in the world), Horseshoe Bend (neither of which I had ever been to) and Lake Powell.

Lower Antelope Canyon was our first stop.

Since school is back in session and it’s getting later in the season, it wasn’t as busy as at their peak times. Just as a note to anyone who would like to go sometime, Labor Day (and probably all holidays) are extremely busy they told us. The tour guide company we used was Dixie Ellis’ Lower Antelope Canyon Tours and it’s ran by the Navajo’s. They were wonderful to work with, have a very friendly cancellation policy and our tour guide was excellent. The price per person is $20. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time which can be done on their website.

There is also an $8/person permit fee (must be paid with cash) that the Navajo Nation charges when you enter.

What looks like a crack in the earth is what you descend into by stairs that are fairly steep.

Once inside there are narrow spots…

…but then there are the areas where it’s roomy enough for 12 people or so to be in one place.

The sandstone rocks have been carved by flash floods.

All my kids are now taller than me – all except my Audrey. But she’s getting close. 🙂

This was the biggest room and it was impressive!

You walk through the slot canyon and come out at the opposite end of where you began.

(See how it looks like just a crack in the earth?)

Next post I’ll tell you about our hike to Horseshoe Bend.
