  • We Visited the State Whose Motto is “She Flies with Her Own Wings”? What’s Its Name?

Okay, what’s your guess? Did you answer Oregon? After saying goodbye to our relatives in California we were Bound for Oregon except we had the comforts of our Suburban instead of a bumpy wagon. The old pioneers of our nation were pretty impressive, weren’t they? Men and women of grit!   I digress. Back to 2012. We decided to celebrate Justus’ birthday (that was in April) while on our trip.  After having a little fun on the way, we drove all night… Can you believe Audrey rode this?  175′ tall and you’re not in a cage! …and arrived in Oregon at daybreak.  I love this state. As we were driving up the scenic highway, we…

  • A Bad Beginning to Our Family Trip

We are home after being away for about 2 weeks.  It has been one marathon of a vacation.  Russell planned everything and he had us on a pretty tight schedule. The first day we drove till 1a.m. Upon our arrival at Sequoia National Park in California, we set up our tent and crawled into our sleeping bags so that we could catch a few hours of rest. It was beautiful up on the mountain.   The Sequoia’s are the largest living thing on earth. They are amongst the tallest trees and their width is more than any other tree. They are simply fantastic and are located in the southern part of the Sierra Nevada’s (the…

  • Justus’s Phonics Trip to Lake Powell

The last few days has been spent trying to get Treasuring the Moments back up and running.  But it’s up and no lost posts!  Yea!! A few days after Zachary’s graduation, our family went on a get-away to Lake Powell.  Lake Powell is an absolutely gorgeous lake with 1,900 miles of shoreline and is the 2nd largest man-made lake in the U.S. Here’s the reason we went… This little guy.  Justus is 8 years old and has finished his phonics course which takes about 2 years to complete.  When our kids finish their phonics we let them pick somewhere in Arizona to visit as a reward.  Of course, the kids all love Lake…

  • 50,000 Books Anyone?

We bought 50,000 books last week (gasp!) – but– not for our home library.   We sell used books online and we were informed about a couple of ladies getting out of the business and selling their books, so we purchased them.  Off to Colorado we went on Monday afternoon.  Russell had only got about a 1 1/2 hours of rest because of staying up all night to get taxes done so he started the 13 hour drive tired.  Travelling through Flagstaff we saw a highway sign stating that I-17 was closed further ahead for a few hours because of dust storms.  So our first stop became a place of…

  • Trip to Florida – Part III

On our last day in St. Augustine, Florida, we went to the Memorial Presbyterian Church – a church built and completed in 1890 after one year of construction.  To complete the church this quickly, workers worked 24 hours a day with two crews of 500 men.   The style is Venetian Renaissance.  Inside the church there is an Aeolian-Skinner Pipe Organ that has over 5000 pipes!  The largest pipes are 32′ tall! Next, we visited the St. Augustine Lighthouse.  Since younger children can not go inside the lighthouse, my sister & I stayed behind with the little ones.  The tower is 165′ tall with 219 steps to reach the top.…
