Trips We've Made

Crabbing in Newport, Oregon

We felt so incredibly lucky to have accommodations right next to the ocean once again. This time we were staying at a Wyndham time share and resort but we didn’t have to use our points because they have some kind of plan where you can purchase the rooms when they are in the off-season – which we did to the tune of $48/night. Can you imagine? That was the most amazing thing that happened on this trip, I think. We had a 2 bedroom condo for $48. I love it!

The kids were ecstatic to be able to go play in the ocean to their hearts content… and then go jump in the hot tub when they needed to warm up. What more could you ask for, right?

Russell was just enjoying watching the kids…

but then he could resist no longer… and joined them.

It was a rainy day so my husband talked to the lady at the front desk and she so sweetly lent us her umbrella. We don’t even own a umbrella since Arizona doesn’t get enough rain to warrant one. So, we had kids in the ocean and we had kids who were protecting themselves from the rain all at the same time.

After a morning of fun in the sun cold rainy outdoors, we cleaned up and headed to Newport.

…to go crabbing. Crabbing is a great activity to do with kids.

Newport is another quaint town in Oregon with lots of shops and attractions along the water.

There are places to rent all the equipment and to get a nice big piece of rotting, smelly meat as bait.

Audrey scored 2 crabs in the hour she crabbed.

We left the pier and turned in our crabbing equipment and continued on to the wharf.

There is a place at the docks you can go and watch the sea lions. It’s free and quite interesting to see them and hear them barking. A lot of them will gather here at one time and the noise they make is loud!

You know that umbrella I mentioned earlier? I’ll tell you a little story about it.

The girls went on a little walk of their own down the beach. When they came back, they informed us that the umbrella had broke. (We didn’t even have it a full day and we broke it. That’s pretty bad. 😉 ) We had to hurry and leave our accommodations since the crabbing shack would be closing if we didn’t step up our pace, so Russell quickly went to the front desk to talk to the lady who had so kindly lent us the umbrella. $20 later (since that was the smallest bill my hubby had on him) we were the proud new owners of a black and white umbrella.

It was raining in Newport and I decided to take the umbrella with me – not knowing what broken meant, I guess! I quickly passed it off to Serenity (you can say I was highly embarrassed!).

Oh, what style we have. lol

Good ole dad took it off their hands…

Now that I think of it, I don’t think I’ve seen the umbrella since that day.

Good ole dad must have taken care of it.  May it R.I.P. forever.

Lesson to be learned: be sure your umbrella is in good working order before you go into public.
