I agree with Lucille in that I wish I would have known all of this before I had my children!

I’ve also heard that about training children while they are young, due to the synapses being soft and pliable, and I agree, BUT thankfully, vision therapy, (which actually retrains the brain to interpret differently what they eye “sees”), has been successful on older patients as well as younger.

Of interest as well is that they prescribed fish oil when Isaac was doing therapy, to keep the corpus callosum (a bundle of neral fibers located in the central part of the brain) soft, so the nerve messages could penetrate it more easily, allowing the signals to cross the brain. They explained that the corpus callosum can become dry and brittle, causing it to act as a barrier. I wonder how much that would help or hinder learning new habits.

Fascinating, Lucille. I’m going to check into that.

I read once that a child can more easily be trained before the age of 12. At 12 years of age, the paths in the brain that are not used as often, begin to close up and the paths that were well established, I believe, stay ingrained. Not that things can’t be learned or taught, but when it comes to habits, I imagine, it would be much less work to establish if the parents were consistent.
