Because I read Dr. Moore and Charlotte Mason almost from the very beginning of our homeschooling journey, it has not been as hard for me to let go of my traditional ideas. Like you though, I definitely struggle with checklists. It is so, so hard to keep in mind that checking off something does not equate with learning. One of the most important things for a child, I feel, is for you to show interest in the world around you and for you to enjoy reading, learning and doing. In my opinion, this is one of the best things you can do for your child.

Due to the fact that I was not taught this way, I find it difficult at times to apply her philosophies to the here and now. I have had to step outside of my comfort zone – which is very organized, follow the rules, check off that list type of zone. I “know” that my kids learn best in this more relaxed manner, but I find great comfort at the end of the day, looking at all those checked off boxes!

Having said that, despite my discomfort, my children love learning in this manner and I am doing everything in my power to learn how to teach them this way.
