This book is one that grips you from the first page. It is the tale of a prince who is self-willed and only wants to do what pleases him.

The story begins with the King going to court to hear the various cases brought to him. Hubert, the self-willed young prince, sits beside him to learn ‘wisdom and justice from his father’s judgements.’ But he is fretful and eager to leave to follow his own pleasures. His father asks him to stay for one more case and is asked to tell the King (his father) what decision he would make on the grievance brought before him. The Prince rules unjustly thereby greatly grieving his father.

Sir Malcolm, one of the King’s councilors, meets with the King that evening and after some discussion the King gives Sir Malcolm complete charge of the Prince.

The lad is taken away from his home and sent for several years to where no one knows him. He lives like the common folk with an old widow lady (who is fully aware of who he is but does not let on) and through all this becomes strong physically and in character.

How he comes back to the palace, well, I’ll leave that for you to find out.

This book is one that should grab the attention of any reluctant reader while being completely wholesome. For myself, I just wish the book hadn’t ended so quickly.
