A Home on Wheels

We arrived home last night after spending a few days with Zachary down in Sierra Vista. He’s getting married in just a month! and we knew this would be the last opportunity we’d have to spend time with him alone. Usually he’s a little distracted since his fiance is here at our home when he is. Remember those days when your time together was never enough? My boys and Russell went to work with him and me and the rest of the kids stayed behind at his little home on wheels. I was able to spruce things up a bit and do some organizing so that my new daughter-in-law wouldn’t be too overwhelmed by where to put all her belongings when they are married in…

A Finished Laundry Room… Almost

I am so happy with my laundry room and the recent changes I’ve made.  First we finished my sewing corner.  Finished may not be the right word since there are still some things I want to do in this corner.  For starters I’d like to fix that light cord that’s hanging along the ceiling.  But I’m loving having a dedicated sewing spot.  Love! Now that I use this cubbyhole as my sewing corner, I wanted a place to put supplies, materials and other craft projects. I have a folding counter in my laundry room and at the end of it there is some open space where I have my trash can as well as my laundry detergent.  This area was always meant to be a sewing counter but it was…

Yesterday you got to see how I restored some order back to the pantry.  I was able to make a shelf organizer for all my canned foods that is not only useful but inexpensive to boot! Here’s what the finished shelf looks like. My son, seeing this picture, said, “You’re going to post that picture?  Look at that can on top.”  Yes, I could have made this look picture perfect I suppose but hey, who’s going to have the perfect number of cans all the time(?), so I just decided to keep things real. To make your own shelf organizer so that your cans are at different heights, you will need to purchase a 2×4.  And that’s it.  You can either have your local Home Depot cut the…

Welcome to my 31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration challenge.  I joined up with The Nester and a host of other bloggers who all chose various topics to write about for 31 days straight.  Since I really enjoy anything kitchen related, I chose that topic for my challenge. For me the pantry is one of those things that you can’t just organize once and forget about, it’s something you have to diligently oversee or it will fall into the same state of disarray that it was before.   Disorder and general untidiness wants to creep in and must be put in check regularly. Thus I decided to organize the pantry since it was starting to fall into a sad state.   Here’s some before shots. It gets worse. Have you seen enough? …

How to Organize Household Cleaning with Kids

Do you have a particular day that you do an overall cleaning of the house?  Friday is my day.  Mom did it that way and I just followed in her footsteps.  Sometimes after having a crowd on the weekend it really should be done again on Monday but unless it’s really bad I don’t do an overall cleaning.  I just wait for Friday.  With kids you could vacuum everyday and with all the dust you have in Arizona, I could dust every few hours but I guess I would rather do other things.  You with me?  As you know, I’m a believer in having your children help around the house like I mentioned my kids do here.  I believe it gives them an appreciation for the…

Sewing Organizer Using Old Jeans

My son had a pair of jeans that were new looking but the back had a pretty bad tear.  “What a shame” I thought, “to throw these almost new looking pants away.  What can I make with them?” In my hunt for a use for them I found a tutorial for the following sewing organizer.  I started to make it but then decided to branch off (gasp!  I know that’s a real shocker )on my own. So here you have Elisabeth’s tutorial for a Sewing Organizer.  Materials needed: 1 pair of jeans for background 4 jean pockets thread iron-on applique’s ric-rac or other decorative item dowel 1 yd. rope Here are the jeans after I cut the legs off.  What I’m trying to say is…

Organizing Under the Bathroom Sink

Since Flylady’s mission for the week is the bathroom I thought that today’s organizing focus would be under the bathroom sink. Under the bathroom sink is probably one of the easiest places to tidy and declutter.  Here are some steps to cleaning that area. 1.  Empty the cupboard out. 2.  Wipe clean with a damp rag. 3.  Gather like items with like. (for example: shampoo, toothpaste & lotions) 4.   Restock your toilet paper, hand towels and bath towels, if needed. 5.  Discard anything that is not wanted and then place the remaining items back under the sink in tidy way or use one of the following ideas to help you maximize your use of the area. The Storage Store offers the following solutions for your hair dryer & accessories. This one is for…

Hair Organizers

On Tuesdays, I would like to start posting about different organizing solutions (unless there’s something else I just have to post about!)  If you have a question about how to organize any part of your home, please leave a comment and I will try to do some research on what products are out there that would help. Ribbons, pony tail holders, bobby pins, barrettes, head bands…. Girls like them all.  Our hair ribbons especially need some organization.  Here are some ideas I found. Lil’ Bow Keep has this adorable little organizer for $30. Babylocks Hair Clips has these for $10. This one is Designs by Joy. Here’s a DIY organizer by Factory Direct Crafts using a picture frame and wooden spools. This lady has several…

My New DIY Thread Rack

I’ve been wanting a thread rack – you know the thingamajig I’m talking about right?  It’s a rack that holds all your sewing thread and not only are you able to readily see what colors you have on hand, you actually have a storage area for all your thread.  I wasn’t really sure how to make one but thanks to Sugar Bee and her Thread Rack Tutorial I was able to see that it is quite possible to make your own. So, using some of that pink pegboard my brother-in-law gave us, I had my son… cut it to the exact dimensions for the area in which it would hang and then spray painted it black. I used a 1/4″ dowel and spray painted that…
