How We Are Killing Ourselves

Did you know that if you are like the rest of the American population that you are killing yourself, not to mention harming your children and future generations that aren’t born yet?  Life, Health & Happiness – that’s what we all want for ourselves and our children but yet we really don’t seem serious about it when it comes to the food we give them. Please don’t click away from this article because you think you’re not interested.  My faithful young commenters Anna & Zoe - this is for you, too.  This topic effects everyone that eats anything at any time in any place.  Would that refer to any of my readers?   It is by no means comprehensive but maybe it’s enough to challenge us all to dig…

This week in our month long topic of 31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration, we’ve talked about gifts from and for the kitchen. First we had Handmade Gifts for the Kichen on Day 19.  We showed some homemade potholders and an hand embroidered apron that was made for my daughter by her grandma. Then on Day 20 we talked about Giving a Meal to New Mothers or 2nd, 3rd or 4th time Moms. (you get the idea, right) Day 21 we again revisited Handmade Gifts for the Kitchen with a few more ideas for those of you who like to sew or are crafty. Frugal Gift Ideas from the Kitchen Today (Day 22) we’re going to wrap up this vast topic by showing you some frugal ideas one can make in their…

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about my approach to high school.  I have 6 children with my first 3 being boys, one already graduated and my second having his graduation party in August.  Zachary (my second son) changed all my thinking about high school when he began several years ago.  You see, he wasn’t like my first son, Seth.  Seth was very faithful and diligent in his bookwork – following conscientiously his mothers high school plan for him, graduating and then going on to enter college for almost a year and doing very well on his entrance exam as well as his classes.  In short, he was a model student. Zachary, on the other hand, did not enjoy sitting at his desk for hours on…

A Special Evening – 60 Years of Marriage

Our guests are all gone now and we’re just getting the house back in order, laundry under control and some sleep, too!  But this past weekend we got to be part of a special evening – my sister’s mother and father-in-law were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.  I was elected to make the Tomato Caprese Salad.  Never having made one, it took me several tries and many questions to finally figure out how it’s done. In this picture I am not doing it correctly, but I’m blissfully unaware of it at the moment. :) There was flower arranging being done by the expert family floral designer… antipasto platters being prepared… jars being filled with local honey as gifts for the guests… even a haircut was given to the guest…

My Mother’s Day Tablescape

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of doing a special Mother’s Day luncheon for my mom.  She lives across the United States in Illinois and I have never been able to celebrate Mother’s Day with her since I was married 22 years ago.  They were only going to be here for 2 days so I had to do it then or miss my opportunity and I sure didn’t want that to happen. I decided to use my wedding china – the only china I own. The pattern is La Rose by Mikasa. A photo from above. I actually forgot to take a close-up of the place setting last Sunday, so I had to recreate it. We had a delicious meal of: turkey mashed potatoes & gravy…

Raising Goats is Not All Easy

While gone to Ohio we had 3 baby kids born. We knew one of the mothers would be having kids but had no clue about the other.  All were healthy and are growing quite well.  Two bucklings and one doeling.  One of the bucks, (Charming, we call him) is getting quite frisky.  He runs and jumps in the air and just yesterday I saw him butting his head with the Boer doeling that was  born in May. This is Charming our 100% Nubian buckling. Charming has a twin which we named Bernard.  Bernard is strong but Charming is the bigger one of the two.  If you’re wondering if all our goats are named, they’re not. Not normally anyways.  I guess I just felt like them having names on that day.  No…

Sewing Unit Study – Day 1

Lately I’ve been challenged to help my daughter enjoy the schooling process more.  Like all of us have found out each child is different with their own unique personality and learning style.  My daughter has seemed bored with school with no real interest in history or science.  Neither has she discovered a love for reading (exception to that is the Trailblazer books by Dave & Neta Jackson).  I have been at a loss as to how I can get her excited about school. Then I thought of Dr. Raymond Moore, a man of much common sense and understanding of children and how they learn.  What would he suggest?  From reading all of his books I knew what he would say.  ”Find the child’s interests and let them study…

The Week in Review – 5/9/10

The week started off with Mother’s Day.  The kids in Sunday School sang a nice song about mothers and gave us each a red rose as well as these cute little teapots with a tea bag in them.  Such a cute idea. This picture was not taken on Sunday.  Justus really didn’t wear this spotty t-shirt to church.  Really! Then we had boys arrive from Tucson and Michigan.  My boys and them wanted to test their mountain man skills and live off the land; so they packed up their gear and headed for the woods (about 4 miles from our house) with some bread and bananas.    The boys took a camera and got some good shots.  I’ll try to get a post up later in the week on…

A Thanksgiving Blessing

While most of you were having a wonderful day celebrating Thanksgiving, we were holding a different celebration.  Not all of us, since Russell and some of the boys were gone deer hunting but those of us who stayed behind wished…  Audrey   a happy 4th birthday!  She wanted gingerbread pancakes for breakfast.  Serenity made her some M*ckey Mouse artwork.    Little Audrey is at such a fun age.  Russell always tells her she’s a nice girl and his little princess.  If he ever just mentions that she’s his little princess, she’ll tack on… “And a nice girl.”  Our two girls are 8 years apart in age but were both born during the Thanksgiving week, so we never can forget to be thankful for these 2 blessings. There was no…

My Son Has Returned

My son has returned!  Seth made the drive back from Ohio and arrived last night.  Sometimes you just don’t know what your kids are capable of and he did surprise me.  He seemed to handle the drive well; we made sure that we called him quite frequently to see how he was doing.  The first day he drove 8 hours to my mom’s and stayed overnight.  The next day I think he drove 12 or 16 hours and still wanted to go on but Russell booked him a motel room so that he could get some decent rest – and because he knows how dangerous it can be to drive when you’re tired. The next morning Seth left at about 5:30 a.m.  An hour or two later, as…
