Hunting season is drawing to a close here at my house. One more elk hunt next week and then we’ll be finished. Hunting can really put some interruptions in your life so I’m kind of glad things are being wrapped up on that end. However, I have yet another hunting post (oh, yes and here is another and yet even another one if you just can’t get enough ). Last week Seth had his bulk elk hunt. This hunt was for muzzleloader - you know – the old time rifle that the pioneers would use? You get one shot and then have to reload – first the powder, then the bullet, ram the bullet, put a primer in, replace the ramrod and then you’re good to go. My son tells me…
Hunting Big Game in Arizona – a Bull Elk
October Family Updates Part III – Coues Deer Hunt
We’re getting there. Slowly but surely we’re making it through the family updates for October. Part I was general news around the homestead and Part II was our annual elk hunt. The third week of October was another hunt – this time for Coues deer. It was Zachary and Ethan’s hunt. (Ethan is my good friend Tina’s son.) Ethan has wanted to go elk hunting for a very long time but getting an elk tag in Arizona is not always that easy. So, he settled for a Coues hunt with Zachary. Apparently they didn’t put in for a very good area and never did shoot anything but they did have a good time. At least that’s what they told me. I didn’t go camping but Ethan’s parents did;…
October Family Updates Part II
How could I forget when I was posting our family updates for October that Justus and Audrey got the chicken pox? They started feeling sick to their stomache and had a slight fever and then the next day litte dots started showing up on their faces and other places. It took us awhile to figure out what it was. They did so well and tried really hard not to scratch. October always seems to be a short month for me because of the general elk hunting season here in Arizona. We only go for a week at the most (I went for 4 days this year.) but we do a lot of planning ahead of time and I do as much cooking beforehand as possible and then there’s the packing…
31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration Day 14: Kitchen Desks
Today is going to be a short post because we’re leaving for our annual elk hunting/camping trip. I’ll be cooking on a camp stove and will even be doing some foil packet cooking for about 60 people. You say 60 people? Yes, we have a rather large group of us that go hunting/camping every year. It’s a really nice time for us all. We make a nice big wagon circle (trailers and tents), have a big campfire and group meals every night. Kids are running around having a good time, games are being played and we’ve even had ”tea” in the Wall Tent Parlor (a fancy name for our wall tent). The real reason we go is for the hunt, so we’re happy when the victory sound…
31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration Day 6: How to Organize Your Refrigerator
Ha! Me writing a post on how to organize your refrigerator?! When I told my husband what I was going to write about, he looked at me as if I had horns growing out of the top of my head or something equally strange. “I didn’t know you had any organization to your refrigerator,” he said to me. I then proceeded to show him what organization I do have in place. After his eyes started to glaze over, I showed mercy and told him he could go on his merry way. Organization is not my guy’s thing. So prepare to be inspired or not, as the case may be. I don’t remove everything from my refrigerator when I clean it but this time I did. Something had spilled…
Freezer Organization 101
Ohhh, I’m loving Microsoft Excel. For years I was intimidated by its mysteries but since I’ve started messing around with it – learning tips from my boys -I’m really finding it useful. This time around I used it for my freezer organization. First let me begin with the cleaning of the freezer because that was the very beginning of my freezer organization and the beginning seems like a very good place to start. Every year around this time I clean my freezers (a chest and upright) because hunting season is just around the corner and having a place to put the meat when it’s brought home is sort of important, I figure. Now you may wonder, why would anyone need 2 freezers. Well, I didn’t always have two. I started off with…
Another Son has Graduated High School! – An Evening Celebration
Well the big event is over. What a special evening we had celebrating Zachary’s high school graduation! We had about 145-150 people and plenty of food for all. With all the activity of family being around for Zachary’s graduation, I got too busy to be posting and then after the graduation dinner, we took off on a little get-away. More on our get-away in another post. The weather was beautiful, the night of the dinner with no wind or rain and the temperature about 70°. Of course there was lots of preplanning. Tables and chairs had to be brought up from the garage to the lawn, table coverings put on and chairs wiped down. You can see Russell in the background stringing up lights that he wired. Russ also built a platform for…
Salisbury Steak with Onion and Mushroom Gravy
Potatoes au Gratin paired with this Salisbury Steak make a delicious supper as we found out last week. The pictures kind of make you think you would be better off if you never ate it, but the flavor is where it’s at folks. It is so good. This meal was a keeper for everyone but Audrey. Maybe the next time it shows up on our table, she’ll have a different opinion. Bad picture quality, I know. Sorry about that… Even if you aren’t a fan of mushrooms, you’re going to like this. Just don’t use the mushrooms and all will be okay. I got this recipe from Cooking During Stolen Moments and changed a few things. Instead of using ground beef, I used our Elk hamburger (no wild taste!) and instead…
Week in Review 11/14 – 12/4 Part I
Russ and the boys were elk hunting the week before we went to Pennsylvania. He managed to get this bull elk the last day of the hunt with his muzzleloader. It’s not a trophy but still a decent sized one. Then it was off to Pennsylvania for 10 days… Audrey and Justus were quite excited to fly in an airplane. This wasn’t their first time but the first time they could remember actually doing it. Upon our arrival my sister had goody bags for each of us… So organized to get that all together and very very thoughtful. Of course there was an abundance of food… Truly. Music almost non-stop Grandpa time A birthday for Serenity who turned 13! And of course, Thanksgiving… with a…
Week in Review 11/7/10
This week my dear husband left for his bull elk hunt along with a few friends from out of state. I managed to get all my meals made and they managed to get everything packed up. All this in addition to one more vehicle loaded down. That’s a lot of stuff. Do you agree? We went to a Thanksgiving tea for the girls. They each got to make their own caramel apple which they really liked. Especially Audrey. My sweet-loving Audrey. Have a happy week,
Thanksgiving Tablescapes Inspiration
I’ll be cooking away the next few days since the hubby and boys will be going on their last hunt of the year. I think we’ll be well stocked for the coming year. We already have 2 elk that’s ready to be picked up at the butcher and now we may have another one? This hunt is going to be all about horns so they will spending long days in the woods looking for that monster bull. I have to come up with 7 suppers that are easy for them to put together heat up. Lucky for them they will have my middle son, Zachary along to be camp chef. The rest of them are a bit challenged in the kitchen. Anyways, since you heard the update about…
Elk Hunting Camp 2010 – Part II
Elk Hunting Camp 2010 – Part I Here’s Part II of our Elk Hunting Camp. On Sunday morning, no one hunts and we have a morning church service at our Church in the Wildwood. It’s always a lovely time with the breeze blowing through the trees and having nature around you. We always have a brunch about 10. We do this so that we can give the hunters a chance to rest since they’ve been getting up very early the other days. It also gives us time for the weather to warm since its in the lower 30′s at before daybreak. We had a beautiful spread. This is just a portion of what was offered. My friend got fancy and made the tiered bread plates using styrofoam cups. I thought…
Elk Hunting Camp 2010 – Part I
I survived. Elk Camp lasted an entire week for some of us and that included our family. It was a delightful time albeit a bit hectic for me. There were a lot of campers this year. More campers than hunters. A few days there were 97 of us (including all children and babies). That’s a lot of people in the woods! I organize all the evening meals so that there is some cohesiveness to the group. Breakfast and lunches everyone plans and eats on their own. Anyways, back to our shared evening meals. The first night is soup night. Everyone brings a pot of their soup that is enough for their family. We then put all the soup together and everyone can pick and choose what soup…
Week in Review 10/3/10
Remember those 400 lbs. of apples I told you we picked? Well this past week was spent trying to use them up. The easiest part was the picking of the apples. So beware, if good fortune should come your way and someone offers you all the apples you want for free, remember… the easiest part of apples is the picking! If you haven’t realized it yet, we do believe in child labor encourage all our children to help. More apples. After juicing 9 1/2 gallons and coring 45lbs of apples, Zachary’s starting to get sick of seeing them. Serenity’s not looking too thrilled either. But then… in the middle of all this apple business, I had to buy 40lbs. of tomatoes. I was feeling really good about…
Week in Review 9/12/10 – Reunion!
My two oldest boys arrived home Tuesday. Finally! Seth was gone to Ohio for 2 months and Zachary to Manitoba, Canada for 6 weeks. They both flew home on the same day with connecting flights in Minneapolis. Neither one knew the other had a layover in Minneapolis since we had purchased their tickets here at home. Russell arranged for them to be on the same flight together and to even have seats right next to each other. How could it go wrong you may wonder… Well Seth, our firstborn, acts like a typical firstborn! We had already imagined that he would be one of the first on board and we also imagined that Zachary might be running down the terminal at the last minute to catch his…
A Week of Organization
By the time you read this on Friday my 3 oldest boys, along with my husband, will most likely be home after being gone a whole week hunting for bull elk. They’ve had a good time seeing hundreds of elk and getting within a few yards of them, seeing them bugle and watching some cow elk playing, kicking up their heels. One morning Wesley saw a mountain lion with her cub walking along. Unfortunately, they did not bag their game. I guess the elk have to win some of the time. I have been doing quite well, surprisingly, with only my 3 youngest and myself at home. I was able to accomplish things I normally am unable to get to. I did some organizing of…
