Butchering Chickens at the Farm

I felt like a real farm girl Saturday.  Let me tell you all about it (well maybe not all, that would be a bit too unpleasant) About 6 months ago I did something I hope I’m smart enough to never do again.  I ordered a straight run of chicks.  A straight run simply means I purchased a bunch of chicks and I wouldn’t know tell they got older if they would be hens or roosters. I was buying these chicks to resell once they became older to people at our church who want meat that’s not soft like what we buy from the store. They’re from the Phillipines and Africa and they want their chicken to be more chewy. But I didn’t feel good about…

An Update on My Gorgeous and Fruitful Garden

I thought it was about time for an update on the farm. My gorgeous and fruitful garden that I planted May 25 has been producing for a short while. I don’t feel that it has produced as much as it should have but my kids think I ought to be pleased. My Mormon neighbor (aren’t they supposed to be good gardeners?) told me all her tomatoes died this year because of the heat. Mine are all living, so I guess I should be quite grateful and thankful! It is so pleasing to walk out to the garden with my little basket and gather bunches of mint for tea or to gather tomatoes as they ripen from day to day, or to pick green beans for supper (I’m…

The Start of My Gorgeous & Fruitful Garden

I finally got the garden all planted… well, mostly.  All that will probably get done this year.  With Zach gone, it fell to me to be the Master Gardener around here.  I really should take a lesson from Lily (have you read her blog Bountiful Blessings yet?  if not, you should) and get my kids to work with me.  Justus & Audrey did for a while but I think it would be better if we did the whole garden all together. I find the garden to be so soothing and I’m hoping it will be rewarding me with bushels of veggies in several weeks. I picture something like Lily’s garden…   or the Strite’s garden they have in their greenhouse… Beautiful but sadly, my garden may look like…

Hatching Chicks from Our Incubator

We have baby chicks! I mentioned that we  (as much time as I have spent researching and checking on those babies, I feel like it’s mine)  the kids had purchased an incubator.  Here’s a quick synopsis of what happened from the time we put the eggs into the incubator… till they hatched!  I placed 10 eggs into the ’bator on April 13 and let the egg turner do its thing which was to rotate the eggs from side to side for the first 18 days.  I wrote the date on the eggs but since realized that it was pretty pointless.  When the 18 days were up I removed the automatic egg turner and placed the eggs onto the metal screen which is on the bottom of the incubator.   After I…

After having 2 people in one day wondering why I’m not posting (family counts, right?), I decided I should give you a little update. The next day after the loss of our new rabbits, Audrey was looking out the breakfast window when she spotted what looked like our new bunny.  The long and short of the story is that the black bunny was found and retrieved.  That we were able to catch it and the location where we caught it was just the Lord because that little fellow could have hid in a multitude of places. I was so happy to have it back, even if it was the male and only cost $5.  The female cost me $20 and that’s the rabbit dinner our dog…

Wing Clipping Chickens

A month ago we enlarged the chicken coop.  The chicks and the hens are quite happy with the set-up, having plenty of room to scratch around for poor hapless insects.  But there was one who would not be content and who became clever to the fact that she could fly out whenever she so pleased.  Life on this earth would not have had a happy ending for the little black hen if our dogs would have found her before I did on 3 separate occasions.  Clearly something had to be done.  That something was to clip the wing of the chicken. I enlisted my resident farm hand, Zachary, to assist me in the task. First we had to catch the thing.  The key to catching a chicken is speed. …

Week in Review 4/10 – 4/16/11

Most people are amazed that chicks can be shipped through the mail but how about bees?  Zachary ordered 20,000 of them and has officially become a beekeeper.  I’ll show you more in a future post. This is half of the bees. Zachary & all his assistants. With a visit to Tucson this week I was able to see for the first time my new little grand niece. She is so precious and adorable. Can’t you tell? We had a celebration of wedding anniversaries while there – ours is this Friday (22 years) and my sister’s is Sunday (30 years). My good friend, Tina, hosted a dinner in her backyard and our wonderful offspring served us a most delectable meal. The service was great. After an…

Our Backyard Chicken Coop

I mentioned to you on Monday that I had a few boys here visiting and decided to put everyone to work enlarging my chicken enclosure.  I am so pleased with how it turned out.  First, I’ll show you our enclosure then our chicken coop.  I have the most adorable little chicks, purchased a week ago.  They are Buff Orpington’s and Rhode Island Reds. I had ordered through the mail, Auracanas & Black Australorps. They are 3 weeks old in this picture. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to mix 3 day old chicks with these 3 week old chicks but it was no problem. The older ones did not hurt them in any way. I love my chick enclosure that we built. Two of the metal roof…

Enjoying the Last Bits of Summer – Tablescape

Only 1 week till my two oldest sons are back home.  I’m so excited!  They’ve been gone too long and I’m anxious to have all my chicks back in the nest. Oh, yes.  I’m supposed to be showing you the tablescape I did this week.  I’ll be happy to oblige, my friends… The weather has been quite nice in the mornings and we have been enjoying eating out on our little balcony. I find it quite challenging trying to think of new combinations for a tablescape using what I already own – and I’m only on my 3rd tablescape.  You ladies that do it week after week are so creative and amazing. A very sweet young friend gave me these dishes that she found in…

The Week in Review 5/23/10

Before I start my week in review, I want to give honor to those who fought and gave their lives in service to our country - a very great price to pay.  May we never forget them. Monday was the day we said goodbye to Zachary’s cello teacher he’s had for the last year.  She’s moving and will be pursuing her doctorate in cello.  She was a good teacher for Zachary.  As we’ve had different teachers over the years, I can say that you definitely need to find a teacher that’s a good fit for your child. We had our end of year awards at 4-H.  This is Zachary’s last year to be in 4-H and so it was another “Goodbye” for him. Our little Boer that was…

The Week in Review

So many things happened this week that I didn’t post about, so I’m going to just do a week in review with pictures.  (that’s me, lots of pictures ) Seth left for Manitoba, Canada, Monday morning at 12 a.m.  I’m  missing him!  I grab 8 forks out of the drawer to set the table and then realize, oops! I only need 7. Russell took me on an anniversary get-away.  Our anniversary was in April while the 4-H EXPO was going so we had to hold the celebration.  21 years.  Unbelievable that it has went by that quickly! When we arrived home from our time at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, which is very reasonable this time of year because of P*riceline (our little secret ), we…

Goats, Puppies & Chicks

Things have changed around here the last week; we are becoming a real bona-fide farm.  We now have 2 milking goats (purebred Nubians), which Zachary milks morning and evening.  He is our early bird and loves being outside so he’s really enjoying this job.  He has a garden planted that he tends to every day, keeping his plot weed free and checking to see what seeds have sprouted.  I’m counting his gardening and goat keeping as part of his science for homeschool.   Nubian kid. We have eight Boer meat goats. And of couse there’s our puppies. "Heeelp!  I’m stuck!"  (the sound of howling) Playing a little ‘follow the leader’. "Squawk!  Cluck, cluck, squawk!  Newsflash from the coop; six chicks have hatched in the last 3 days.  Squawk!" (notice the…
