Some kids have a harder time in school than others. If you’ve homeschooled more than one child, I’m sure you know this very well. And their struggles can be so different from the other one. I have one child that has difficulty with reading comprehension. I could see there were problems with understanding when they were younger but as they’ve grown older, it’s manifested itself more clearly. I made mistakes along the way and would say things like, “You’re not paying attention,” “How are you supposed to learn if you don’t pay attention?” This only damaged their confidence. I have been thinking about this comprehension problem for a while and have reflected that if something’s not getting through to the child, it’s the way it’s being…
Why My Child is Not Comprehending What They’re Reading
A Night on The Town & Some Cute Gingerbread Houses
My hubby and I have had good intentions through the years to take our children out on individual “dates” but we haven’t been consistent in it at all. So we decided since we’re not doing that well taking them out individually, we’ll do it together. What I mean is Russell & I will go together with the child instead of just one of us going. We’ve already gone on 2 dates this month. I could really get into this! I like eating out. No cooking, no dishes… Are we on the same page? First we went to Wal-Mart since Audrey wanted to go shopping.:) Shopping she did – all up and down the toy aisles v.e.r.y. s.l.o.w.l.y., pushing buttons on everything she saw. We finally…
Homeschooling the Young Child Who is Resistant
In response to my recent post titled Traditional Education – Is it Really the Best Way to Teach our Children?, Lily left a comment saying… “Very Interesting! I understand that all children are gifted in different areas, but for those who bulk at the basics at an early age, in spite of following Charlotte Mason style principles, what should one do? Should you keep trying different approaches, for example Dianne Craft’s techniques until something clicks? Up to this point, when one of my students has had difficulties, I have tried a dozen different curriculum choices, different learning style approaches, and lots of praying until I found something that worked or at least made it easier for the child. Is that the best approach?” I thought…
A Little Civil War Reenactment
A few weekends ago we had a Civil War Reenactment here at our place. The boys have really enjoyed being a part of this. They are issued uniforms, taught how to follow orders and to shoot muskets and then are involved in two battles. To be fair, the South wins one battle and the North the other one. My 3 boys as well as my 2 nephews. My dh with his favorite “toy”. If you want to see more pictures of this battle you can go to We Make History. They have some really nice photos.
Farewell, Granny Smith
Yesterday we laid to rest this Granny Smith apple tree that we planted 10 years ago when Seth (18yo) was only 8. We have the only green patch (our lawn) for miles around so we battle regularly with free roaming cattle that are grazing on the National Forest nearby. Seth liked Granny Smith’s and asked, all those years ago, if we would get one for him. So, we did. It was always a runt of a tree probably due to the fact that cows came to visit it even back then. Seth had to be the man and do the deed. Now in its place we have… I’m thinking a pine tree would look good here. And cows don’t eat those, right? Farewell to a…
