Open shelving is not something I would have considered in the past but it certainly can be attractive as these pictures will show. I love the vintage look of this kitchen.  Notice the touch of color that’s added with the cups and scale. {auctiongirlvintage.typepad.com} {thekitchn} This kitchen looks cozy – warm and inviting.  Love the wood floor, too.   {d30opm7hsgivgh.cloudfront.net} {perfectly imperfect} Visit Perfectly Imperfect and you can see the before picture of Shaunna’s cabinets with the doors still on. If you need some really great tips on how to keep your open shelving always looking attractive, go to The Inspired Room and read Melissa’s post “How to have open shelving in your kitchen (without daily staging).” So what’s your opinion?  Does this make you think twice about your cupboard doors or are…

Proverbs 6:8 6Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. Come along with me on my 31 day journey of Kitchen Inspiration for the month of October.  My past posts - 31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration.

Biscuit Mix Recipe That Stores Well A few weeks ago I shared a master biscuit mix recipe.  I talked about how I could take the master mix and multiply it till it would make enough to feed my family of 8 for 3-4 times.  I finally bought some dry milk so that I could see how it would work when making such a large quantity. You will need a large  8qt. or larger mixing bowl and a regular mixing bowl. Here is the large mixing bowl I used. (8 quarts) The smaller mixing bowl is for you to take a portion of the master mix from the large bowl and cut the butter into it.  After the butter is cut into small pieces, you will then add it to the…

Today I’m going to show you an appliance center/pantry solution that my sister’s family came up with when moving into the 1100 sq. ft. home they remodeled. Their family really likes to cook and experiment with all things related to nourishment; so this large appliance center has been very helpful since cabinet and counter space is limited. You would think the double doors would really get in the way of things but they have not found it to be a problem. Although this is more of an appliance/work area, it does hold their flours, some grains, beans, potatoes, onions and some large cans of tomatoes.  Thus it also qualifies as a pantry. Do you have a pantry that you would like to share?  Email me at timbuck2mom…

Ha! Me writing a post on how to organize your refrigerator?! When I told my husband what I was going to write about, he looked at me as if I had horns growing out of the top of my head or something equally strange. “I didn’t know you had any organization to your refrigerator,” he said to me.  I then proceeded to show him what organization I do have in place.  After his eyes started to glaze over, I showed mercy and told him he could go on his merry way.  Organization is not my guy’s thing. So prepare to be inspired or not, as the case may be. I don’t remove everything from my refrigerator when I clean it but this time I did.  Something had spilled…

I have a few items that really work for me in my kitchen - 6 items that I have no regrets purchasing.  Maybe they’ll help you, too, or inspire you to something even better. #1  I like to reuse the plastic bags I get when I go shopping but where to store them? Some of the ways I have tried are: Stuffing them all into one bag and then placing the overfilled bag into any cubby I could find so they would be contained and not all fall out grocery bag holder like this one.. I didn’t have a good place to hang it and it seemed to not hold very much as well as being a bit awkward when getting a bag out but then I got this wall mount grocery bag…

Yesterday you got to see how I restored some order back to the pantry.  I was able to make a shelf organizer for all my canned foods that is not only useful but inexpensive to boot! Here’s what the finished shelf looks like. My son, seeing this picture, said, “You’re going to post that picture?  Look at that can on top.”  Yes, I could have made this look picture perfect I suppose but hey, who’s going to have the perfect number of cans all the time(?), so I just decided to keep things real. To make your own shelf organizer so that your cans are at different heights, you will need to purchase a 2×4.  And that’s it.  You can either have your local Home Depot cut the…

Welcome to my 31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration challenge.  I joined up with The Nester and a host of other bloggers who all chose various topics to write about for 31 days straight.  Since I really enjoy anything kitchen related, I chose that topic for my challenge. For me the pantry is one of those things that you can’t just organize once and forget about, it’s something you have to diligently oversee or it will fall into the same state of disarray that it was before.   Disorder and general untidiness wants to creep in and must be put in check regularly. Thus I decided to organize the pantry since it was starting to fall into a sad state.   Here’s some before shots. It gets worse. Have you seen enough? …

There is a lot of discussion on whether a person should drink milk or not.  One never knows who to believe since there are so many arguments for and against but here’s one way to simplify things.  See what the Bible has to say about it. Proverbs 27:27 And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens.     I guess that’s good enough for me. This verse does reference goat’s milk but if you do a search you will see where Abraham also gave the Lord cow’s milk.

31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration

One of my favorite home-keeping jobs is working in the kitchen. Yes, I get in RUTS where I wonder what in the world I’m going to feed the family each day… times when I wonder just how many ways EGGS can be made for breakfast… and other days when I wish I had a kitchen fairy who would wave their wand and give me a CLEAN  kitchen.  Those are the negatives for me but the good things are I get to test the million and one recipes that are out there, make my family happy with a meal that’s not only good for them but tasty (this can be hit and miss:)), learn food presentation skills and practice organizational skills (love that!) 31 Days of Kitchen Inspiration So this month when I read The Nester and 7 other bloggers…

A Fall Mantle

I stored all my Fall decorations in some Rubbermaid containers which made it nice and easy to know just where I had everything.  Taking everything out of the box I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my Fall Mantle but when I finished I was quite pleased with how it all turned out. I was at a rustic wedding recently (the wedding where  Zachary played his cello at and then had the major car accident on his way home) anyways, at this wedding they mixed rustic and refined looks together.   It gave me the idea to use this pretty little doiley on my rustic mantle.  The doiley was handmade and given to me by some recent guests of ours.  So nice!  I love the orange…

Homeschooling the Young Child Who is Resistant

In response to my recent post titled Traditional Education – Is it Really the Best Way to Teach our Children?, Lily left a comment saying… “Very Interesting!  I understand that all children are gifted in different areas, but for those who bulk at the basics at an early age, in spite of following Charlotte Mason style principles, what should one do?  Should you keep trying different approaches, for example Dianne Craft’s techniques until something clicks?  Up to this point, when one of my students has had difficulties, I have tried a dozen different curriculum choices, different learning style approaches, and lots of praying until I found something that worked or at least made it easier for the child.  Is that the best approach?” I thought…

A few days before Zachary’s accident, we went and checked on his bees.  I’ve been taking care of them since he’s now working in Sierra Vista.  I have to give them sugar syrup every day since Zachary purchased his bees after the nectar flow in the Spring. If you take all their honey, if there’s not a good nectar flow or if you miss it when you first buy your bees like we did, you have to give them food, or they’ll die. Both hives are doing well. Hive #1 had a lot of stores (food being stored up for hard times) and quite a bit of capped brood which means, bees in the making.   Notice the honey stored up in these cells?   This is…

A Life Spared

We never know what the next moment holds but we are so grateful that we serve a Living God who’s a very present help in time of trouble. Russell and I and Zachary were in Flagstaff for a wedding yesterday.  Zachary had went up on Friday, driving Seth’s truck, since he was going to be playing his cello for the wedding.  So, Saturday night, around 7:15 – 7:20 p.m. we were driving along back home.  We were ahead of Zachary with 2 vehicles separating us.  Russell is always watchful of anyone that is following us, so he was looking in his rear view mirror to see where Zachary was, when he saw sparks and something funny happen.  We were going into a slight curve at…

This is the Beginning of a New Day

God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good.  What I do today is important because I’m exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something I have traded for it.  I want it to be gain, not loss; good, not evil, success, not failure – in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it – Author Unknown

Save Time and Pre-Make Your Own Biscuit Mix

Using a Master Mix is a way to save yourself time in the kitchen when it’s time to cook something tasty for the kids, the whole family or even just you and your husband.   Biscuits and gravy are one of my family’s favorite breakfast meals but for me, my least favorite part is mixing up the biscuit batter.  Well, not really that but the part where you take the pastry blender and cut the butter into very small pieces.  That’s my dread. But what if I could make a mix that would potentially be enough for my family to have biscuits 3-4 times?  The way you can do that is to make a master mix, consisting of all your dry ingredients, and then later you add your water or milk. I…

Freezer Organization 101

Ohhh, I’m loving Microsoft Excel.  For years I was intimidated by its mysteries but since I’ve started messing around with it – learning tips from my boys -I’m really finding it useful. This time around I used it for my freezer organization. First let me begin with the cleaning of the freezer because that was the very beginning of my freezer organization and the beginning seems like a very good place to start. Every year around this time I clean my freezers (a chest and upright) because hunting season is just around the corner and having a place to put the meat when it’s brought home is sort of important, I figure. Now you may wonder, why would anyone need 2 freezers.  Well, I didn’t always have two.  I started off with…

How is it possible to have written so much about how to make the little breakfast sandwich, the egg mcmuffin?  Have I possibly made something that is quite simple – complicated? I hope not because I think everyone should try their own homemade egg mcmuffin at least once in their life.  Notice, I said homemade.  No McDonald’s version, okay? Egg McMuffins are great for a breakfast on the go or when you’re sitting down to the breakfast table.  Although you’re trying to do several last minute things at once when you make these, part of the solution is to have everything ready to assemble and all your ingredients on the counter (mise en place) before you start cooking. In my list of “The Players”, I mention herbed…

Need a Reasonable Source for Canning Supplies?

I am really excited about this.  I just learned from Jill at The Prairie Homestead that Azure Standard sells jars – gallon jars and canning jars.  They also sell canning lids and rings and at very reasonable prices with no shipping, I might add. You can buy wide-mouth canning 432 lids (w/out the ring) for about $.24 each.  They have regular mouth lids as well for $.16 each. I know if you live in the east in Mennonite country, you are able to get rings for a reasonable amount.  The last ones someone picked up for me cost about $.10 each but since I live in Arizona, that option is not too readily available, no? Wide mouth quart jars are selling for about $1 each and regular…
