I have been researching the way children learn in depth since we talked this summer. So far, I’ve found lots of info on how children do not learn. Have you read an article by Mr. Gatto that explains what he feels is a “proper” education? I’m reading Charlotte Mason’s original writings at present, and have gleaned quite a bit. I don’t want to mention names on here, but one of my children is struggling due to the eyes not working together properly. We are doing vision therapy at present and praying for complete healing.

Would you advise me to go on as we are (using My Father’s World – a Charlotte Mason style curriculum) or would you change completely? Reading, Writing and Spelling are the areas that are affected by this problem, but he loves math and enjoys his science and history. Also narrates very well and is curious about life in general. He tested very high in his IQ, just problems with his eyes.

(Thus school was full of thrice-read History lessons and dreadfully long hours during which yours truly tried to memorize the important facts, etc.) I seriously thought that I was stupid and just couldn’t learn or contain knowledge like the other kids in my homeschool group.

BUT: My wondrous Mother found about about Dianne Craft’s “Right Brain/Left Brain” DVD, and it looks like the answer to many a prayer. (As she has already explained in her comment.)

My oldest daughter and I watched Dianne Craft’s DVD on Teaching the Right Brain Child, and were very inspired by how she trains children to take mental pictures to cement information into long term memory. Anna has been trying it out while we have been canning and has been amazed at how much better she can remember the steps involved. I am going to talk with Joel and am seriously considering following your advice. I’ll be honest, it scares me to death, despite the fact that what we’re doing isn’t working. It is very helpful to know you have been there and seeing how well-educated Zachary is despite the non-traditional methods.
